Today marks the start of Birth Trauma Awareness Week 2022, and we felt it important to acknowledge this important topic, and its role in how it can affect our mental health.
"Trauma" may seem like a strong word to use....birth trauma may not immediately be something you associate yourself as having gone through. But many experiences where we felt scared, vulnerable, out of control and frightened, could leave our brains feeling like its experienced trauma. In many cases, birth trauma isn't recognised until much later on and late diagnoses are very common. This often means we are left not understanding why our mental health is not in a good state....this can be especially confusing when we've just had a baby....a time when society drums it into us (often very unfairly) that we "should be happy".
PANDAS is here to support you....and there are also amazing charities, like Make Birth Better who dedicate their time to supporting those who've experienced birth trauma.
This week's theme is diagnosis and treatment, where many will be talking about birth injuries (physical and psychological), how they affect us and how long it takes to receive diagnosis and treatment. Do keep an eye on Make Birth Better Make Birth Betterand Trauma Association - UK for lots more info and advice coming up this week.
