Tatiana Mela: Another baby traveled a long distance to see me. He has been diagnosed locally with a severe tongue tie but has also been left to overcompensate. But at what cost? This parent shared with me: "I cannot bond with him as he is constantly crying. This is my second child, and I feel so lost. You are my last resort."

It is painful to witness, to be honest with you!

Tatiana Mela: Why, as a conscientious professional, would you discourage this parent from having their baby treated early on?

What is the issue? Is it a lack of knowledge, understanding, ignorance, or something else?

Would you want your own child to experience this level of restriction?

If you see this, this needs a Release!

Tatiana Mela: I am receiving these types of inquiries on a daily basis.

Mother: Hi Tatiana,

I am enquiring about a Tongue Tie assessment for my son. He is 20 weeks now. He was diagnosed with a severe tongue tie at birth and after initiating breastfeeding, I had to stop after a week for a variety of factors but including ni**le soreness.

I am concerned that he seems to get a fluid blister on his bottom lip with a bottle, however he is feeding and gaining weight well.

But from doing some research and discussing further with my HV, I am concerned that it may affect his weaning/speech going forward. He has a real heart shape when protruding his tongue and does click sometimes.

Is he now too old for this to be done in your clinic? Or is an assessment still possible?

Many thanks,

L

Tatiana Mela: D2 Feedback.

Mother: Hi Tatiana,
Yesterday evening she was really irritated and upset (understandably) but fed well! She is taking 5oz at a time now instead of 4oz over an hour☺️
A lot more content in the day today also allowing me to leave her on her baby mat - on her back! This evening a bit more irritated again but still very early!

I don’t have any concerns at the moment!
I have managed to get a picture from today which I will send also!

I have posted on Cardiff mums on Facebook today about you to say how much I recommend 🩷

Tatiana Mela: This is as we say Posterior Tongue Tie! I didn’t even to have the right tools to check from the description you know that the tie can only cause all of these symptoms! Finally, after all the hoops that had to be jumped they got to the bottom of a problem!

Tatiana Mela: Babies are incredible! Only36 hrs post frenulotomy. The same baby who was struggling with many things just 36 hours before. It’s all was avoidable if Frenulotomy was done correctly at 6/52.

Mother: Sleeping with her mouth closed, so weird to see! X

Tatiana Mela: Not even 24hrs yet post frenulotomy to read this put smile on my face!
This is the baby who has been partly treated or not treated, call it as you like at 6/52 of age. She was unhappy, restless, poor sleep, dribbling while feeding from the bottle, choking and gagging on solids, mouth breathing and miserable 8 months old!

Mother: Hi Tatiana,
I think she had her best night sleep, she slept from 8:30-5am with only a one minute wake up for a bit of comfort. She was great after the procedure, like nothing happened to be honest and is her usual happy self this morning, drank a bottle with no breaks which is unusual for her.

Tatiana Mela: There should have been no need for the second treatment if the initial procedure had been performed correctly and the family had received proper postoperative monitoring. The family was concerned that the tie was only partially divided. Lacking a clear understanding of the signs and symptoms to watch for, they struggled for an additional six and a half months.

Tatiana Mela: Post treatment Feedback! Happy feeds baby! I am looking forward to monitoring her progress and how she will with her solids!

Tatiana Mela: This not reattachment this baby hasn’t been treated properly!
