💊 Following the success of last year's tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) animation, the Pharmacy Patient Education team has released two new informational videos on the use of CDK and PARP inhibitors.

At Velindre, patients receive a bespoke education consultation from the Pharmacy Patient Education team to help them understand how to take their medication, how to safely manage toxicities, and when to ring the treatment helpline for advice.

💬Sarah Goman, Pharmacy Patient Education Team Lead and the driving force behind these videos, said:
"We wanted to make sure that patients had access to information about the treatment that they are receiving in a way that is easy to understand [...] By making this video we can share key common side effects for these treatments to patients and their carers which they can refer to at home. Based on the feedback that we received from the initial video, the aim of these animations is to compliment any written or verbal information already received."

📢 Are you a patient having Pembrolizumab treatment?

Currently, Pembrolizumab is given intravenously (through a vein) which may take a few hours to be administered.

We will soon be giving you this treatment as a subcutaneous injection into your thigh, which will only take a few minutes.

Please wait to be contacted by your specialist team here at VCS.

💙 During Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, we recognise that starting radiotherapy treatment can feel overwhelming and uncertain.

Matt, one of our Advanced Urology Practitioners, explains how patients can prepare when undergoing prostate or prostate bed radiotherapy - helping to make the process clearer and a little less daunting.

💙 Two palliative patients have now successfully received radiotherapy on the Ethos Treatment Machine.

Within VCS, we currently have three Ethos machines in operation: one at VCC and two at the V@NHRU. Expanding the treating cohort to include palliative patients represents a significant milestone for the service and brings clear benefits in both machine capacity and the quality of patient treatment.

This achievement has only been possible through the close collaboration and dedication of our radiographers, medical physics, and clinician colleagues. Their collective efforts have been instrumental in making this important service development a success.

Dr Samantha Warren, Head of Radiotherapy Physics said:
"This is a result of several years of work in commissioning and installing state-of-the-art technology and in developing new treatment methods as part of the IRS program [...] It's especially rewarding to see this being rolled out first at the satellite centre in Abergavenny, demonstrating the commitment of all our staff to equality of care for patients across the region."

📖✨ Today, on World Poetry Day, we’re delighted to share a beautiful poem written for us by one of Velindre’s wonderful supporters, Andrew Challis, created to mark a year of incredible milestones across Velindre University NHS Trust.

A huge thank you to Andrew for gifting us such a thoughtful and heartfelt piece.

2026 is a truly momentous year for us, as we celebrate:
❤️ Welsh Blood Service – 80 years of providing a vital lifeline for patients across Wales, including 10 years as an all Wales service.
💙 Velindre Cancer Service – 70 years of delivering world class, compassionate cancer care.
💚 Velindre Cancer Charity – 30 years of funding essential support services that enhance patient experience and go beyond what the NHS alone can provide.

Andrew’s poem beautifully captures the spirit, history, and heart of Velindre University NHS Trust and now we’d love to hear from you.

If our Trust has touched your life, inspired you, or holds a special place in your heart, we invite you to share your own poem or piece of writing with us.
