🩺 Are you currently on immunotherapy, or have you received it in the past?

Dr Elise Lang, our Primary Care Cancer Lead, explains why it’s vital to keep your GP informed about your immunotherapy treatment, especially when it comes experiencing side effects.

πŸ’¬ You can also ask your clinical team at Velindre to complete the GP Immunotherapy Letter. This is a helpful way to ensure your primary care team has the information they need to support your ongoing care.

Wear Red is Velindre Cancer Centre Fundraising's flagship event which takes place this year on Friday 27 February.

We can't wait to see your red outfits – wacky, wonderful. As long as it's red, we're here for it!

Your simple act of kindness will make a world of difference to our patients.🌟

And for all of you Global Player and Heart radio listeners, keep an ear out this month to hear some familiar voices, including RHOD GILBERT, talking all things Wear Red πŸ“»

πŸ’Š We recently welcomed pharmacy students from Cardiff University to see the site of our new Velindre Cancer Centre.

Students on the visit heard directly from colleagues in the Velindre Pharmacy department, who explained the role the department plays in treating patients and how their staff are involved in the design and development in the new Velindre Cancer Centre.

The pharmacy department in the nVCC will include a pharmacy robot and two patient education rooms. A pneumatic system also links pharmacy to other departments for quick and safe delivery of items.

Scheduled to open next year, our nVCC will deliver world-class cancer treatment, enhanced diagnostic capability, and greater access to research and innovation for people across Wales πŸ’š

πŸ… Upon her visit to Velindre Cancer Service, the Chief Nursing Officer for Wales, Sue Tranka, presented our Head of Infection, Prevention and Control (IPC) Hayley Harrison Jeffreys with the CNO Excellence Award.

Hayley joined Velindre Cancer Service in 2002 and has spent more than two decades championing the highest standards of safety for both patients and staff.

Notably, Hayley has taken it upon herself to go above and beyond to create interactive games and events to engage staff in ensuring infection control measures are embedded into their day-to-day life.

Congratulations Hayley! πŸŽ‰

πŸ’™ We were proud to start the new year by welcoming Sue Tranka, Chief Nursing Officer for Wales (CNO), and Gillian Knight, Deputy Chief Nursing Officer (DCNO), to Velindre Cancer Centre.

This was a valuable opportunity to meet a number of our amazing nurses and to hear first-hand about the fantastic nurse-led clinical, research, innovation and professional developments within the service.

Sue Tranka said: "We very much appreciated the opportunity to discuss how services are evolving, including ambitions for care closer to home, treatment models, and how nurse-led research and innovation continues to develop. It was encouraging to see strong nursing leadership and clear alignment of future service plans with strategic direction."

πŸŽ‰ We are delighted to share the fantastic news that our Chief Pharmacist, Bethan Tranter, has been designated a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society – one of the highest honours in the profession.

Bethan’s recognition reflects not only her outstanding leadership and contribution to pharmacy but also the collective excellence of our entire Pharmacy team. It’s a proud moment for Velindre and a powerful reminder of the difference we make every day.

Congratulations, Bethan! πŸ’š

πŸ“’ Today, we have made the decision to step down the universal mask-wearing across VCS.

However, there still are winter viruses and COVID around, so we all still need to need to remain vigilant and:

🏠 Stay home if you have respiratory symptoms.
πŸ’‰ Get your influenza vaccination, if you have not already.
βœ‹ Maintain good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette.

Masks will remain available at entrances and clinical areas for anyone who wishes to wear them.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all staff and patients for your cooperation and commitment to mask-wearing over recent months. Your efforts have been vital in helping us protect each other and maintain safe services. πŸ’š
