🎉 Dr Rosie Roberts, Nurse Consultant for SACT, has co-authored an article for Cancer Nursing Practice, titled 'Assessing frailty in older adults with cancer to optimise care provision and outcomes'.

Rosie has worked for Velindre Cancer Service since 1990 in a variety of roles including Ward Manager and Specialist Nurse, and completed her doctorate in 2020. She became one of our first ever nurse consultants in 2024, and became the first non-medical prescriber in Wales to complete the Level 4 SACT prescribing competency.

💬 Nicola Williams, Executive Director of Nursing, AHPs and Health Science, said:
"Massive congratulations to Rosie and her colleagues on this publication and for the fantastic work they have been doing on frailty. Frailty is a really important area for us in respect of cancer care and it is a huge credit to Rosie for being recognised nationally in this developing field of cancer care. Rosie, one of our first two Consultant Nurses, is a prime example of how nurses can achieve their full potential at Velindre. Well done Rosie."

🎉 This week, Digital Health Assessments were introduced for cancer patients on Colorectal and Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) pathways.

The assessments, first launched in September 2025, are already supporting patients on the lung, neuro‑oncology, and prostate pathways, helping teams better understand patient needs and improve personalised care.

You may have received a text message welcoming you to this service. Please be assured that no action is required from you.

Leigh is an unsung hero of Velindre. Truly a champion of patient-centred supportive care 💚

With the help of your contributions, we are able to fund a team of people who go above and beyond to make sure patients always feel comfortable and supported.

One of these wonderful people is our Patient Support Officer, Leigh Porter.💚

She is often the central point of contact at the centre, signposting patients, families and staff to more information and in-depth support ranging from clinical psychology and counselling to complementary therapies or financial help.

Her role exemplifies our mission to enhance the experience of every patient who comes through the doors at Velindre Cancer Service - and none of it would be possible without your donations.

💚 Llais Cardiff and Vale are hosting a public forum on Wednesday 11 March 2026 at Whitchurch Community Centre.

There will be short talks from Llais and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, as well as a Q&A session. This is followed by activities where you can share your views in a safe, supportive space, on any health topics you wish to discuss.

After the event, feedback will be collected and shared anonymously with services, who are required to respond to the feedback that is shared.

If you or someone you know, has experience in accessing women’s health and wants to help improve it, we’d love to see you there. If you can’t attend, you can still share your views with Llais directly at cardiffandvaleenquiries@llaiscymru.org

Alternatively, you can join Llais' online session on Saturday 14 March at 5pm. Register here: 🔗

🎉Velindre Cancer Service are proud to celebrate the opening of the brand-new Velindre @ Nevill Hall Chemotherapy Unit, in partnership with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

This purpose-built unit at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny will make it easier for people across Gwent and South Powys to access expert cancer care closer to home. Open every Tuesday and Thursday, it will deliver around 20 chemotherapy sessions a day, around 15% of Velindre’s total daily chemotherapy capacity. This expansion helps us meet rising demand while reducing long travel times for patients.

Designed with comfort and dignity at its heart, the new space includes:
🪑 7 comfortable chemotherapy chairs
👩‍⚕️ A dedicated team of Velindre nurses providing person-centred care
🌄 Large windows with calming views of the Abergavenny hills

The unit welcomed its first patients last week, with care delivered by our wonderful team of Velindre nurses.

Carl James, Interim Chief Executive of VUNHST, said:
"We are committed to providing patients with high quality care as locally as possible. The opening of the Velindre @ Nevill Hall Chemotherapy Unit is another important step on this journey. Our partnership with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is well established and we are excited to be able to provide offer services to patients from across the whole of South East Wales at this facility. From now on patients will be able to receive both radiotherapy and chemotherapy at Nevill Hall which should improve their overall experience.”

⭐ We are delighted to share that we will be using Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT) to treat cervix and endometrial cancers.

SGRT is an advanced radiotherapy technology that uses 3D camera systems to track a patient’s body surface in real time during both treatment setup and delivery.

Since introducing SGRT into clinical practice in 2024, VCS has successfully expanded its use across multiple tumour sites, including breast, head and neck, prostate, thoracic, and abdominal cancers. From January 2026, cervix and endometrial cancers have proudly been added to this growing list.

This milestone is the result of outstanding collaboration between medical, physics, and radiography teams and represents an important step forward in improving both the precision and efficiency of radiotherapy for this patient group 💚
