First new Velindre Cancer Centre arts commissions now live 🎨💚

We’re pleased to announce that the first arts commissions for our nVCC have been published.
These opportunities mark a major milestone in our plans to create a contemporary, dignified and healing environment for our patients, families and staff when our new home opens in spring 2027.
Our world-class new centre has been designed around the needs, voices, and experiences of patients, families and staff from the beginning. More than a building that delivers the cancer treatment Velindre is renowned for, our new centre will offer a calm, accessible, and supportive environment.

Commissions include:
✅ Murals
✅ Waiting area artworks
✅ A central sculpture for the main entrance

Comisiynau celf cyntaf y Ganolfan Ganser Felindre nawr yn fyw 🎨💚

Rydym yn falch o gyhoeddi bod y comisiynau celf cyntaf ar gyfer ein CGFn wedi cael eu cyhoeddi.

Mae'r cyfleoedd hyn yn nodi carreg filltir bwysig yn ein cynlluniau i greu amgylchedd cyfoes, urddasol ac iachusol i'n cleifion, teuluoedd ac i’n staff pan fydd ein cartref newydd yn agor yn nhymor y gwanwyn 2027.

Mae ein canolfan newydd o'r radd flaenaf wedi'i chynllunio o amgylch anghenion, lleisiau a phrofiadau cleifion, teuluoedd a staff o'r cychwyn cyntaf. Mae ein canolfan newydd yn fwy nag adeilad sy'n darparu'r driniaeth canser y mae Felindre yn enwog amdani - bydd yn cynnig amgylchedd tawel, hygyrch a chefnogol hefyd.

Mae’r comisiynau'n cynnwys:
✅ Murluniau
✅ Gweithiau celf yn yr ardal aros
✅ Cerflun yng nghanol y brif fynedfa

✨ Celebrating a World First for Velindre on World Creativity and Innovation Day✨

Velindre University NHS Trust has become the first healthcare organisation in the world – and the first NHS Trust – to achieve both the ISO 56001 Innovation Management standard and the BSI Innovation Management Kitemark.

💡 What does that mean?
This shows that how we develop new ideas, test them, and turn them into real improvements that meet the highest international standard for innovation management; it’s about better care, better experiences, and a stronger future for everyone who relies on our services.

🚀 Innovation in action
This approach is already making a difference, with our success in projects such as:
🩸 The Dragon’s Heart Project – using autonomous drones to transport blood safely and efficiently
🏷️ QR code wristbands for palliative care patients – helping emergency teams access vital information quickly and respectfully

Together, we’re building a future where innovation delivers real benefits for patients, donors, families and our staff.

🎨 This World Art Day, we’re celebrating the power of art to heal, connect, and comfort.

Our Arts in Health programme aims to improve the experience of patients, donors and staff through regular, visible, high-quality art provision for all. The programme includes artist residencies, art workshops, art commission and a community gallery space.

Anadlu is a monthly cancer support group which meets on the fourth Thursday of the month at St Fagans, National Museum of History. The sessions include a mindful walk of the site or a closer look at an object in the collection, followed by a creative activity.

On World Art Day, join us in celebrating creativity to make a difference where it matters most.

Coming up! ⏳

Do you want to have your say on the future of the Whitchurch Hospital site?

Next Friday and Saturday (17 and 18 April), we’ll be welcoming members of the local community to take part in facilitated workshops focused on the future of the Whitchurch Hospital site.

This is a chance to:

• Share ideas and priorities
• Listen to different perspectives
• Help shape the insights that will be passed on to any future developers

As the current landowner and a long standing neighbour, Velindre is committed to being open, responsible and community focused as plans for the site move forward. These sessions are a key part of that commitment.

Both sessions are identical – you only need to attend one. Spaces are limited and booking is essential!

💊 Following the success of last year's tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) animation, the Pharmacy Patient Education team has released two new informational videos on the use of CDK and PARP inhibitors.

At Velindre, patients receive a bespoke education consultation from the Pharmacy Patient Education team to help them understand how to take their medication, how to safely manage toxicities, and when to ring the treatment helpline for advice.

💬Sarah Goman, Pharmacy Patient Education Team Lead and the driving force behind these videos, said:
"We wanted to make sure that patients had access to information about the treatment that they are receiving in a way that is easy to understand [...] By making this video we can share key common side effects for these treatments to patients and their carers which they can refer to at home. Based on the feedback that we received from the initial video, the aim of these animations is to compliment any written or verbal information already received."
