🎆 Helping Your Dog Cope with Fireworks

Fireworks season can be terrifying for our dogs — especially rescues who’ve already faced scary or unpredictable experiences. Here are some ways to help keep them calm, safe, and supported:

🏡 1. Create a Safe Den

Set up a cosy “hideaway” before fireworks start — a quiet room or covered crate with blankets, toys, and familiar scents.

Let them choose where they feel safest — don’t force them out if they hide.

🎧 2. Drown Out the Noise

Play calming music, white noise, or TV to mask the sounds.

Close curtains and windows to reduce flashes and bangs.

🕯️ 3. Keep Things Calm

Stay relaxed yourself — dogs pick up on our stress.

Try gentle reassurance in a calm voice, but avoid over-fussing if they’re trying to settle themselves.

🐶 4. Use Natural Calming Aids

Adaptil diffusers or collars can help.

Consider calming treats, supplements, or a vet-approved remedy if they’re especially anxious.

🚶‍♀️ 5. Walk Early

Give them a long walk before dark so they’ve exercised, toileted, and can rest more easily when fireworks begin.

💌 6. Keep Them Secure

Double-check gates, leads, and collars — frightened dogs can bolt.

Keep ID tags and microchips up to date, just in case.

💓 7. Comfort Is Key

If your dog wants cuddles, offer them. If they want space, respect that.

Sometimes your calm presence is the biggest comfort of all.

The anticlinal vertebra is the point in your dog’s spine where the angle of the spinous processes (those bony bumps you can feel along the back) changes direction.

In dogs, this is usually found around T11 (the 11th thoracic vertebra).
Above this point, the spinous processes tilt backward, and below it, they tilt forward — forming a kind of “peak” or “hinge” in the spine!

It represents a zone of transition where spinal motion and stress distribution change, which can be relevant when we think about fitting harnesses on dogs.

Keeping our dogs healthy starts with understanding what makes their bodies unique, fromTongue to Tail!

Loki’s Maintenance Myotherapy Session 🐾
Loki had his regular maintenance treatment. He has a little muscle wastage in his hind limbs, which we’re helping to improve through targeted myofascial release and gentle massage techniques.

When he first started his sessions, Loki was a little wary — but this was his 3rd treatment, and now he really enjoys it! It’s lovely to see him relax and actively engage in his sessions❤️🐾

Muscle wastage (atrophy) can develop for lots of reasons — reduced movement from discomfort, old injuries, or even compensating for tension elsewhere in the body.
Myotherapy helps by improving circulation, reducing tension, and encouraging better, more balanced movement — allowing those weaker muscles to strengthen and rebuild naturally over time.

If you’ve noticed subtle changes in your dog’s muscle tone, posture, or movement, and would like to find out how Myotherapy could help, feel free to get in touch. 🐶🐾

🎃 Fascia & Cobwebs – The Spooky Connection! 🕸️

Just like a cobweb, your dog’s fascia is a delicate web that connects and supports every part of their body — muscles, joints, and organs all linked together in one incredible network! 🐾

But when this “web” gets tight or tangled (from injury, overuse, posture changes, or stress), it can cause:
🕷️ Restricted movement
🕷️ Stiffness or lameness
🕷️ Behavioural changes
🕷️ Even a change in mood!

A tense fascia can make your dog feel like they’re stuck in their own spooky web 👻 — not moving as freely or happily as they should.

✨ Galen Myotherapy helps gently release those fascial restrictions, restoring comfort, movement, and calm — helping your dog feel like themselves again! ✨

Keep your dog’s body web free and flowing beautifully this Halloween 🎃🐶

🐾What Can Changes in Your Dog’s Coat Mean? — Mitch’s Galen Myotherapy Session 🐾

Sometimes your dog’s coat can tell you more than you think!
A dull, rough, or uneven coat can be a subtle sign of underlying muscle tension or restricted movement.

This is Mitch — an agility dog who comes for regular maintenance sessions. When he arrived this morning, I noticed his coat was more uneven and swirly than usual. On checking, he had tightness through his lower lumbar area, particularly around the longissimus dorsi and gluteal muscles just above his hips.

Muscle tension like this can affect how a dog moves, stands, and even how well blood and nutrients reach the skin and coat.

After his Galen Myotherapy session, Mitch’s coat became noticeably smoother. Releasing that tension not only helped his movement but also improved his overall comfort and wellbeing — a lovely reminder that a relaxed, happy body shows on the outside too🐾❤️

If you’ve noticed changes in your dog’s coat, posture, or movement and would like a friendly chat about how Galen Myotherapy could help, I’d love to hear from you 🐾❤️

❤️🐾Choice-Led Therapy – Always with the Dog’s Consent ❤️🐾

At Wight Canine Therapy, every treatment is completely choice-led and carried out with the dog’s consent, following the Galen Myotherapy PACT® ethos.

PACT® stands for the Positive Progressive Affective Cycle of Therapy — a cycle of choice-led treatment that always puts the dog at the centre of every decision.

Some guardians can feel worried if their dog doesn’t settle straight away, but that’s perfectly normal. Every dog is unique, and some — especially more nervous or foreign rescue dogs — may need more time to feel safe and comfortable in the therapy space. Building trust and confidence is always the first step.

I take my lead from each dog’s movements, posture, breathing, and subtle signals, allowing them to tell me when they’re ready for touch and how much they’re comfortable with.

When a dog feels calm, relaxed, and in control, their body releases tension more effectively, and they gain far more from the treatment — both physically and emotionally.

By working with your dog, not on them, we create a positive, trust-based experience that supports their overall wellbeing, comfort, and confidence. 🐾. Photo is the gorgeous Rosie enjoying her treatments❤️🐾

Let’s talk about the latissimus dorsi - a broad, powerful muscle running along the sides of the body from the lumbar region (lower back) to the upper front leg.

The “lats” are key players in shoulder retraction, and stabilising the trunk. But when they become tight or overworked — often from repetitive activities like ball chasing, digging or slipping on floors — they can restrict shoulder mobility and even affect movement patterns.

This is a very touch sensitive muscle, which relies on myofascial balance in your dog's body and is vital for their physical health of your dog - from Tongue to Tail.
