Do you work in a dusty environment?

Many work activities can create dust, and exposure to any dust in excessive amounts can cause respiratory problems. The creation of dust can be a problem in almost any industry, from filling/emptying bags of material to crushing and grading to feeding livestock to cleaning and maintenance work.

The harmful effects of dust can vary from skin irritation to respiratory problems and lung cancer, depending on the composition of the dust and the type and degree of exposure. Never assume that dust is safe and ensure that prevention and control measures are in place. Read more about dust in the workplace here:

Happy Friday!

A reminder from the Fit2Work team to always wear your PPE when working on site 🧤🥽

Employers must provide sufficient information, instruction and training on the use of PPE to both those with a contract of employment AND those who have a more casual employment relationship/work under a contract of service.

Do you have the right PPE in place for your duties at work? If not, speak to your employer today and get it sorted.

We love to check our statistics at Fit2Work to see what we have accomplished as a team.

Last year, we conducted 624 hearing tests in and around Cumbria as part of our health surveillance.

As employers, you must provide health surveillance (hearing checks) for all your employees who are likely to be regularly exposed above the upper exposure action values, or are at risk for any reason, e.g. they already suffer from hearing loss or are particularly sensitive to damage. These checks are not only important for the health and well-being of the employee but can also determine whether the control measures put in place within the work environment are doing their job.

Remember to consult your trade union safety representative, or employee representative and the employees concerned before introducing health surveillance. It is important that your employees understand that the aim of health surveillance is to protect their hearing.

If you'd like to have a chat about how we can help your employees at Fit2Work, please give us a call on 07796015265.

Becoming Fit2Work

Fit2Work was established in 2004, a small idea that was originally to assist one organisation in their occupational health requirements. I never knew that it would grow to what it is today, now providing advice to a broad range of clients in both the public and private sectors throughout Cumbria. This includes educational establishments, construction and manufacturing companies.

The services we provide include health surveillance, health screening, general health and ultimately fitness for work. We further signpost to tertiary organisations such as talking therapy and physiotherapy. Overall the aim is to provide a quality, bespoke and cost-efficient service that is tailored to the needs of each individual client.

We thought up our logo in a local restaurant and with an input from myself, my husband and both my daughters I like to consider this to be very much a family business.

The small but hardworking team based at Currock House in Carlisle consists of Sally and Heather, the OHAs, Denise in administration and Janice in accounts. Physiotherapist and holistic therapist Katie Foster and Dr Lea Andrews are also key members of our team.
