We’ve been trying out my garden with some solstice qi gong to see if it’s suitable for some outdoor yoga next year …it felt amazing to be outside in the fresh air with a backdrop of the fells! Looking forward to what the new year brings! Merry Christmas 🎄

Welcoming the winter solstice. A time to rest and restore. This article read aloud by acupuncturist Peter Firebrace is a reassuring listen if you feel that you would prefer to withdraw more at this time of year. Here’s an excerpt:
“The three months of winter are called closing and storing. Herbs and trees wither. The insects leave. The openings of the earth close. The yang qi goes into hiding, moving into the depths. Water freezes and the earth cracks. It is essential to close everything tightly. One should not overwork.
Winter has always been seen as a challenge and without warmth, food and shelter it most certainly is. ‘Il ne passera pas l’hiver’ the French say of a frail old man on the threshold of winter. He won’t make it through. The hibernator’s regenerator, winter is also death’s door. Preserving and conserving, it also often kills.
But for many winter is like sleep, a temporary death that renews and regenerates us deeply, as it does the whole of nature. No buds, blossoms, shoots or fruits means no overwork. It’s the silent season of wu wei 無 為, the non-doing that does everything by doing nothing. Every aspiring Daoist feels at home here!”
Listen to the whole of this short article here:
Like a sleeping bear turning deep in its snow-bound cave, reaches that touchstone milestone marker of d**g zhi 冬 至, winter’s extreme, the solstice turning point, winter’s heartland that brings light out of the depths of darkness. Winter Solstice: Peter Firebrace FBAcC

Good morning Sunday! Reaping the rewards of buying an old, old house at auction this time last year. It may not have central heating yet, but the view from my bedroom window is magic! It looks like a day full of promise … ☀️

I’ve been out of my acupuncture clinic for the past two days starting my journey as a gardener! What a fantastic course by Shelagh Todd. I arrived with zero knowledge of garden design and have left feeling inspired and motivated to begin my new life long relationship with my garden 🪴 and the scones were delicious too! Highly recommend any course by Shelagh and as a venue

There's just 14 days to go until Acupuncture Awareness Week (AAW) when British Acupuncture Council members such as me will be promoting the benefits of traditional acupuncture.
I'll be offering some ear seed taster sessions from Carlisle Therapies on Saturday 15th November. These are 15 minutes (£10) and a rare opportunity to experience an ear seed on an acu-point - and to ask me questions. You can read more about AAW and how to book your slot in my Blog linked below.
Acupuncture Awareness Week (AAW) is organised by the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) to promote traditional acupuncture as practised by it’s member acupuncturists.A key message is that BAcC members have extensive training to degree level. This training enables them to practice traditional acupu...

traditional acupuncture, acupressure, yoga
Why do I have so many letters after my name? Because my evolution to yoga teacher has taken some time.
I have been a professional acupuncturist (tCM) and body-worker for nearly 15 years. As lifestyle changes are integral to a tCM (traditional Chinese Medicine) approach to health and wellbeing I set up yoga classes from my holistic centre Carlisle Therapies over five years ago - to encourage my patients to include mindful movement and breathwork into their lives.
I have completed 300 hours yoga teaching training (YTT) specialising in Slow Flow yoga. Normally I run classes and workshops from Carlisle city and Keswick. In response to the current pandemic I now also provide an online platform for my classes, which include acu-yoga - a unique blend of the ancient healing traditions of acupuncture and yoga.
a yoga class for every body
Yoga means "union" of mind and body through breath. It is more than simply stretching and differs from a fitness class.
All my yoga classes include breath-work (pranayama), yoga flow (asanas) and relaxation (shavasana). Yogic mindful movement with the breath helps build up physical strength without injury, increase flexibility and calm the mind. People of all ages and those who cannot get up and down from a mat can hopefully benefit from my Beginners Chair Yoga video.
If you are completely new to yoga then I recommend my popular Absolute Beginners Yoga 5 week course. New dates coming soon. I also offer private virtual yoga tuition.
acupressure for health
Acupuncture without needles, all you need is your hands!
Normally I include acupressure into my face-to-face acupuncture and massage treatments.
Now, I am sharing some general self-help pressure point routines for home use. Afterwards I recommend a deep relaxation session such as my Body-Scan meditation. Acupressure is most effective when accompanied by deep breathing.
A complete online consultation can be arranged. This will include taking a full case history and you will receive tailored acupressure and lifestyle advice. For fees and to arrange an appointment contact me on 077 88 616 488 ruth@acupuncturecumbria.co.uk
Remember, acupressure is not a substitute for medical help.
