Today marks 30 years since we lost my dad, and I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge not just his passing, but who he was — and who we are because of him.

He was the third generation of George Hudson & Sons. My dad built the business up from my grandad, George, and his own grandad before him — also George. A true local family business, founded on trust, respect, and caring for families at their most distressing times.

The business was originally based in Caldewgate, where Sainsbury’s stands today. In 1975, my dad made the decision to relocate to where we are now. It wasn’t just a business move — it was a commitment. Our business and our home became one, built on the belief that families would find comfort in knowing their loved ones were never left alone. A unique attribute that continues to bring great comfort to families.

Over the many years, I have seen how the funeral industry has changed, and I’m not sure what my dad would make of all those changes. There was no social media in those days, and our business has never been about us or about numbers. It has always been about the care we offer families at their time of need.

We have quietly got on and done what we do best — our family caring for your family. No massive social media presence, just a business built the old-school way, on trust and word of mouth.

Thank you to everyone who has put their faith in our family over the decades. And thank you to my dad, for making it all possible.
Miss you 😘

The issue of funeral delays caused by the new Medical Examiner system continues to attract national attention - and SAIF is proud to lead the conversation on behalf of bereaved families and our members.

Yesterday, we featured in The Times and The Sunday Times and spoke directly to the nation on Nick Ferrari's LBC show to highlight the unacceptable delays causing distress to grieving people across the country.

Since the reforms were introduced, the time taken to register a death has risen markedly, with some families waiting weeks to secure the necessary paperwork.

Talking to Nick Ferrari, SAIF funeral director John Weir of John Weir Funeral Directors made the point that safety cannot come at the cost of the bereaved, while highlighting that the current system is compounding the trauma of loss.

We will continue to press the government for a comprehensive review of death certification, better resourcing to clear backlogs and a system that prioritises the needs of grieving families.
