Structured, coach-led strength training designed to protect your health and independence — delivered within a committed, supportive training culture. Barrie Mark Personal Training has been coaching adults in Carlisle since 2007. We specialise in structured, coach-led strength training for adults aged 35+ who want to stay strong and age well. Many of our members join after feeling unsupported or out of place in traditional gyms. Others recognise that as energy dips, stiffness increases or health concerns surface, doing nothing is no longer an option. Our focus is simple: build and preserve strength so you can protect your health, mobility and independence for decades to come. Nothing is left to guesswork. Alongside this, we have built a committed, supportive training culture where members feel respected, encouraged and accountable — not judged. We are a structured personal training facility designed for long-term health and capability.

Most people don’t struggle because they don’t know exercise is important. They struggle because, for whatever reason, it never quite sticks.

That’s where having a coach makes a real difference, and not in the way people often think. It’s not about pushing harder or doing more, it’s about making things progressive.

All that really means is starting at a level that suits you and then building things up at the right time. No rushing, no guesswork, just a steady approach that actually fits into your life.

What we tend to see is that when people start to notice even small improvements, something shifts. They feel a bit more capable, a bit more confident, and they begin to trust the process.

From there, behaviours start to change without it feeling forced. People show up more, they’re a bit more accountable, and they’re more willing to push slightly beyond what feels comfortable.

Over time, it goes beyond just exercise. People feel more connected to what they’re doing, they start to enjoy it more, and the environment and the people around them play a big role in that.

When you’ve got others around you doing the same thing, it naturally pulls you forward. You don’t want to fall behind, but more importantly, you feel part of something.

And that’s usually the point where consistency stops being something you have to think about, and just becomes part of what you do.

How can we help you with your health and fitness?

Seeing members move and train is something we celebrate.

From their first session, first week, 21-day anniversary, 50 sessions in, 100 sessions, every year, even on their birthday, we give them an extra PT session on us to use.

We make this intentional for a few reasons.

1. Fitness deserves celebrating - For many, life is busy, work is demanding, and many people carry fears, doubts, and years of failed attempts. So when someone commits 2–3 hours a week to their health, we think that’s worth recognising.

2. Positive reinforcement builds consistency - When people feel acknowledged for showing up, they’re far more likely to keep going. Consistency beats intensity every time.

3. Progress isn’t just physical - when those moments are recognised in a room full of people working towards similar goals, something powerful happens. People begin to feel part of something. The sessions become more than exercise. They become connections, encouragement, and shared progress.

Clare has really settled into her training over the past year, and it has been great to watch her confidence grow week by week. When she first started, she was a little quieter, but now she’s much more comfortable in the sessions, getting involved and backing herself in her training. It’s been great to see that confidence develop.

What stands out most about Clare is the way she approaches her training. She listens carefully to coaching, takes on feedback, and applies it straight away. That willingness to learn and improve is great to see and has allowed her to see improvements build.

Consistency has been a big part of Clare’s progress as well, with a commitment to 2 sessions per week. She is a regular at 3pm sessions; these work perfectly for her, and she can have that switch-off time, dedicating 50 minutes to herself.

Great work Clare, we can't wait to see what the next year brings!

When it comes to getting stronger, results can happen quite quickly.

Generally for the people that come to BMPT, they have done little to no exercise recently, so they're in the best position to see some results. Everything is new — new movements, new routines, and a change to what their body has been used to.

There is also usually a high level of optimism at this point. Pushing yourself feels easier. Making time for exercise feels more manageable. Motivation is high.

This is often called the “beginner phase”, and it’s a great place to be. Your body adapts quickly. Strength improves week to week. Things that felt difficult at the start soon feel normal.

But this phase isn’t about going all-in for a few weeks. It’s about using that early momentum to build habits that last long after the motivation fades.

Turn up consistently. Focus on the basics. Get a little bit stronger each week. That’s where the real change happens.

If you’re someone who hasn’t exercised in a while and you’re thinking about getting started, you’re actually in the perfect position to see progress.

If you’d like some help taking the first step, send me a message and we can have a quick chat about where to begin.

Dave chooses BMPT because he knows he will get supported, a tailored approach and trainers that care more than your usual gym membership.

What truly motivates Dave to exercise regularly is his desire for a positive future. He aims to improve his health, enhance his mental well-being, and maintain his independence in the years to come. By making a commitment of 2-3 times a week, he knows he's working closer towards those results. It's not always easy, and life can throw challenges; however, he does his best to honour that commitment and make progress towards the positive changes he seeks.

There are many people looking to see improvements towards their health, but don't know where to start. Book in for a coaching conversation & learn about the ways we can help, just like Dave did a few years ago.

Weekly round-up.

This week we had a few guests join our Friday staff education session.

We wanted to give members a look behind the curtain and show what actually goes into the planning, discussions, and problem-solving that happen beyond the training sessions themselves.

Good coaching does not happen by accident. It is built through regular reflection, learning, and honest conversations about how we can do better for the people we coach.

For the last 10 years these sessions have happened every single Friday. Non-negotiable.

Consistency is something we constantly encourage our members to prioritise, so we hold ourselves to the same standard.

Each week we challenge ideas, review what we are doing, and look for ways to improve. The aim is simple: keep learning, keep developing, and continue providing a level of coaching that goes beyond the norm.

Liz has been a member with us since 2020.
Through her time with us, she has continued to impress us and improve in every session.

Liz loves to train regularly each week and ensures she gets to her sessions. She takes the time to invest in herself for herself. Even recently, swapping her usual session times around when life has thrown some curveballs. All to make sure she gets her training in! This allows her to keep playing with her grandchildren, go on holidays around the world and keep doing the things she loves.

Even when life throws its challenges at Liz, she continues to keep her health and fitness as a priority, and it is truly paying off. As her coaches, it's an absolute pleasure to continue to see her progress, all whilst having a laugh and enjoying each minute (Even when we add in some split squats 😅)

We truly can't wait to see what the next 6 years bring for Liz! Lots of laughter that's for sure . 🥰

If you want to get back to doing what you love or just make everyday life easier, click the link below, and we'll be in touch! 😊

Meet Carrie!

She came to BMPT to prioritise her health and fitness and some dedicated time in her busy week for her.

Throughout her time with us ( over 6 years! ), she has undergone a huge transformation which has allowed her to develop new strength, fitness, and friendships all through regular exercise.

A significant aspect for Carrie beyond the gym, is being a great mum. Shes now physically in shape to look after her boys, play with them, challenge them and know that her body is capable. Alongside this, she serves as a great role model to them, but also in her professional life.

We love having Carrie part of the BMPT family & supporting her through another year of fitness & health

Today we celebrate the life of one of our former members Greg Pluckrose.

Greg made everyone feel welcome in his company; he would always have a smile on his face and a tale up his sleeve to tell you.

One of the fondest memories I have of Greg is when he told me that he had signed up for Gelt Gladiator with the rest of the team. The picture here is of him in a mud bath, still with that smile on his face.

As a mark of respect, we will close the gym in the afternoon and evening to allow those who knew him to attend and pay their respects.

If desired, donations will be shared between Hospice at Home and Oak Tree Animal Refuge Carlisle via

Congratulatuins to all members of the Magic 12 Club!

Members of this club have successfully completed at least 12 sessions in February. It's great to see some new names on here 🥳

On average, aiming for three sessions per week is essential for most people to see some form of physical results. Attending these 12 sessions helps to make everyday life easier, allowing our members to keep doing the things they love for years to come!

If you're looking for a different environment than your 'traditional gyms, ' BMPT could be the place for you.

Many members come to BMPT after a significant turning point in their lives, often facing physical challenges like a slowing body, an injury, or a lack of confidence with their physical shape. Confronting these issues can be difficult, as it involves facing years of choices that needs looked at and adjusted.

The first aim is to help you value exercise, understand its benefits, and foster a supportive environment for healthier living.

A common mistake people make when attempting to change is trying to do everything at once, leading to an "all or nothing" mindset. For example:

- Setting goals to train 3-4 times a week, even though they haven't consistently exercised for many months/years prior to this.

- Trying to track food intake without having any form of basic planning or organisation when it comes to food, cooking times or consistency prior to this decision.

- Prioritising recovery and supplements over basic recovery habits like just going to bed & waking up at a similar time, reducing caffeine and screen time & reducing alcohol consumption.

Throwing yourself into all of these areas (there's more that people go into, trust me) However, you might find that the overwhelming amount of change is too much to handle. This can lead to feelings of impatience as you await results, and you may feel discouraged when you don't achieve the outcomes you desire.

Does this sound familiar?

If so, we'd love to chat things through with you and talk about an approach which might be more sustainable.

Strength training as you age is something we encourage our members to see as a non-negotiable.

Why is it so important?

Without physical strength, you risk becoming vulnerable in your daily life. Consider the activities you enjoy: going for long walks, lifting and moving things in the garden, or playing with your kids and grandkids. What happens if you find you lack the strength for these activities?

Some people think, “Lifting weights isn’t for me.” However, that mindset is similar to saying that being physically independent or strong and capable in life isn’t for you.

We understand that change comes with barriers, and admitting that you need extra support can be one of the toughest challenges. Yes, it can be difficult to acknowledge this, but once you do, you often feel happier and gain a clear plan and direction to work towards.

If you’ve ever thought strength training isn't for you, take a moment to reflect on activities in your life that you may be struggling with now, or those you used to do easily 5-10 years ago that have become more challenging. If any of these come to mind, it may be time to explore strength training.
