Structured, coach-led strength training designed to protect your health and independence — delivered within a committed, supportive training culture. Barrie Mark Personal Training has been coaching adults in Carlisle since 2007. We specialise in structured, coach-led strength training for adults aged 35+ who want to stay strong and age well. Many of our members join after feeling unsupported or ou

t of place in traditional gyms. Others recognise that as energy dips, stiffness increases or health concerns surface, doing nothing is no longer an option. Our focus is simple: build and preserve strength so you can protect your health, mobility and independence for decades to come. Nothing is left to guesswork. Alongside this, we have built a committed, supportive training culture where members feel respected, encouraged and accountable — not judged. We are a structured personal training facility designed for long-term health and capability.

John chose BMPT because he wanted structured support and proper guidance on strength training. Lizzie encouraged John to join after she experienced significant improvements in her physical health following some life-changing injuries. They both recognize the value of their investment in personal training compared to the traditional gym experience and hiring a personal trainer from there. They have now been with us for over six years and regularly attend 2-3 sessions each week.

Listen to their story; we would love to help you with your health and fitness goals, just as we have with John and Lizzie.

One of the most basic, yet often overlooked, habits for improving your health, energy, and fitness… is daily movement.

And I’m not talking about gym sessions, yoga, or pilates.

Just… walking.

For most people, daily movement looks like making a coffee, walking to the printer, or doing a few jobs around the house.

All useful, but often not enough.

What tends to make the real difference is being a bit more intentional:

• Breaking up your day with a walk
• Ending your day with a walk to decompress

If that feels like too much right now, look at your week

Is there more opportunity to move at the weekend?

By doing this consistently, you’ll likely notice:

Less aches and pains
More energy
And a body that feels more capable day to day

It’s simple & effective and achievable for most.

What it ultimately comes down to for most people is feeling supported.

When support is lacking, routines and consistency tend to falter. It's important to remember that there is no such thing as a perfect week. One week, you might experience positive momentum, while the next could present unexpected challenges. This is where the support and guidance of a coaching team can be invaluable.

Here are a few ways to approach this:

Accept setbacks quickly: If a week doesn’t go as planned, don’t panic. It’s not the end of the world, nor does it mean that your efforts aren’t working. Instead of starting something new or giving up altogether, acknowledge the situation and move forward.

Plan for challenging weeks: Just as we envision what a perfect week looks like, consider what can still be achievable during a tough week. Identify what you would be happy to achieve in those weeks, but make sure it's realistic, even when things are not going smoothly.

Reach out for help: Whether it's hiring a personal trainer or talking to your partner, friends, or family, seeking support can make a difference. Sharing your struggles can provide alternative perspectives and may lead to helpful solutions.

By incorporating these strategies, you can maintain your momentum, even during difficult times.

Congratulations to our members who have achieved a total of 12 or more sessions throughout March, and happy anniversary to everyone who joined in March over the years!

Consistency is our most powerful tool for achieving results; it always surpasses perfection.

Here’s how we encourage consistency among our members:

- Train a specific number of days each week. Even during challenging weeks, aim to maintain at least 1-2 sessions.

- Eat in ways that support your lifestyle. For many, this means being consistent 5-6 days a week, focusing on whole foods, minimizing processed foods, limiting alcohol, and being mindful of your emotions and how they influence your eating habits.

- Incorporate movement whenever possible, such as during your lunch break or at the end of your workday.

These are the three key areas to focus on. By spending time planning and organising, you can achieve results through consistency.

Steven is the definition of consistency!

In each of his sessions, he truly puts all his efforts into walking out even better than when he walked in. As coaches, we couldn't be happier with his attitude towards each and every movement he does. Due to his consistency, he has been able to massively improve in his cricket & running performance.

Steven is taking part in the Manchester Marathon tomorrow, and we have no doubt he will achieve his time aim.
It's been great to see his focus shift towards bettering his single-leg strength work and recovery in order to achieve the training miles needed to train for a marathon. 🏃🏼‍➡️
This specificity has truly shone through in his results, ensuring he is fully prepared for tomorrow!

We can't wait to see what his next goal is. Keep up the great work, Steven 💪

The conversations that happen before and after sessions are special & it’s something we actively promote.

Why?

Because it’s where people realise they’re not doing this on their own.

It’s the quick chats before, where someone admits they nearly didn’t come in. It’s the conversations after, where a tough session turns into something to be proud of. It’s hearing someone else say exactly what you’ve been thinking all week.

That’s how connection is built & how a room full of individuals becomes a group that supports each other.

Over time, that creates a different kind of environment. One where showing up feels easier. Where honesty replaces pressure & where people actually want to be there.

That’s the kind of culture we’re building.
And it makes everything else work better.

Most people take time before committing to their health and fitness. That’s understandable. It should be a considered decision.

But there’s a point where thinking turns into hesitation.

The doubts start to creep in:

What if I’m not fit enough to start?
Will I hold others back?
Is this really for me?

We hear this every day.

So instead of trying to eliminate those thoughts, we reframe them.

“What if I’m not fit enough to start?” becomes
“I’m fit enough to start at my level.”

“Will I hold others back?” becomes
“I’ll work at my pace, and that’s exactly what I should be doing.”

“Is this really for me?” becomes
“If I don’t do this, what’s my alternative — and where does that leave me?”

That last one is important

Because doing nothing isn’t neutral. It usually means the same frustrations, the same habits, and the same results, just a few months further down the line.

The goal isn’t to feel 100% ready. It’s to be willing to start despite not feeling ready, and trust that the team will support you throughout the journey.

Helping someone do something they once thought they weren’t capable of is one of the most rewarding parts of coaching.

And for a lot of people, that starts long before lifting heavier weights or hitting personal bests.

It starts with walking into a gym without feeling out of place.

At first, the gym can feel intimidating. Like everyone knows what they’re doing… and you don’t.

So you create limits.
“I’m not strong enough.”
“I’ll never be one of those people.”
“This just isn’t for me.”

But over time, those limits shift.

And the real moment isn’t just a better lift or a faster time.

It’s when you look back and realise you’ve gone far beyond what you once believed you could do.

That’s where coaching makes the difference.

Not just in what you achieve… but in what you realise you’re capable of.

Mike has been a member with us since 2024. He trains regularly on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; the only time this changes is when he goes on holiday.
This consistency has shown in his training; he loves to be challenged and pushed, but also trusts and listens to us as coaches when it comes to making changes to suit him and get the best from his sessions.

We absolutely love having Mike as a part of our community. He tends to stick around after sessions and have a coffee and a chat, making those connections outside of sessions. Even coming in on his Birthday! Not only does he regularly attend social events, but he has also become known for providing biscuits on a Friday morning 🤩

It's been great to see Mike's improvement in his movements, progressing in not only strength but in technique, too. This progression has allowed him to improve every session and keep active outside of his training, making everyday life easier!

Keep up the great work, Mike 💪🥳

One major obstacle for Gosia was her lack of confidence, which stemmed from feeling intimidated by traditional gyms. However, since joining BMPT, she has experienced a significant reduction in knee pain. This improvement has allowed her to move more freely, enjoy activities without discomfort, and travel without worrying about pain.

Listen to her story!

When should you stop pushing… and just maintain?

It’s a question we were asked recently, when it comes to strength training, there isn’t really a finish line.

Your body is always adapting:
• You build muscle
• You get stronger
• You move better

Which means what once felt difficult… should become easier over time.

A simple way to look at it is this:

Think back to when you first started.
How did those exercises feel then… compared to now?

That difference is progress.

And once something becomes comfortable, it’s a sign to move forward again — not stay where you are.

While progress will eventually slow with age, most people are nowhere near that point.

They’ve still got plenty left in the tank.

So rather than asking when to stop pushing…

It’s better to ask how to keep progressing in a way that suits you.

We’ve loved hearing what our members have been getting up to over the Easter period.

It’s not just about sessions in the gym. It’s what those sessions allow people to go and do outside of it.

Long walks with family.
Bike rides that would have once felt daunting.
Climbing hills and mountains.
Playing with grandchildren in the park, the garden, or even just around the house — without needing to sit down after five minutes.

These are the things that matter.

For many of our members, these moments weren’t always possible. Or at the very least, they were harder, shorter, or avoided altogether.

Now, after consistently showing up two or three times per week, they’re noticing the difference.

Not just in how they look, or physically feel, but in how they live.

And it’s often occasions like bank holidays, weekends away, or time with family where that progress really becomes obvious.

That’s when it clicks:
“I couldn’t have done this before.”

That’s what we’re really aiming for. Not perfection or quick fixes.
Just steady, consistent progress that gives you more from your life.

If you’re someone who feels like you’ve lost that ability, to move freely, to keep up, to enjoy being active, it’s something you can rebuild.

One session at a time.
