🤧 Coughs, Colds & Winter Wellness ❄️
It’s that time of year when coughs, sore throats and colds are on the rise — and flu is starting to make an appearance.

For most coughs and colds, there’s no need to see a GP. Keep your medicine cabinet stocked with the basics — like paracetamol or ibuprofen, throat lozenges, decongestants and a thermometer.

(Our friend Gizmo seems to have a good supply — though he reminds us that other brands are, of course, available! 💊🧺)

✅ Always follow the instructions carefully, stay hydrated, and rest where you can — we know that’s easier said than done!

🩺 Flu symptoms can include:
🌡 A sudden high temperature
🤕 Aches, tiredness or headache
😷 Dry cough or sore throat
🤢 Loss of appetite or nausea
Most people recover within a week with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medicines. If your symptoms get worse or you’re worried — especially for children, those over 65, or anyone with a long-term condition — contact NHS 111 for advice.

💉 For flu vaccination clinics, check with your local GP surgery or pharmacy for details.

Over the next few weeks, health and care organisations across Cumbria will be sharing more winter wellness tips as usual, to try and help everyone stay as well as possible this season. 💙💚

11/11/2025

Please note that the surgery will be closed from 1 O’clock tomorrow (12/11/25) for staff training. We will be back open as normal on Thursday 13th November. If you need medical help during this time please contact 111, your local pharmacy or, as always, 999 in medical emergencies.

Today we reflect on the ultimate sacrifice made by members of our Armed Forces.

Their commitment to protecting and serving our communities will forever be remembered with gratitude, and their legacy of courage continues to inspire us all.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them 💙

Updated 1:45pm – 29/10/25:
We’re pleased to report that the technical issue with the phones across some of the GP Practices has now been resolved by providers. Thank you very much for your patience during this time. 💚💙

Updated 8am - 29/10/25 - this is still the case this morning for some practices with providers still working to fix the issues as soon as possible. We will keep you updated.

4:00pm - 28/10/25
We're receiving reports from some GP Practices that they are having some issues with their phone lines currently, which is resulting in limited lines/an intermittent service. This is again a wider issue with telephony providers.

💡 In the meantime, if your GP practice offers alternative ways to request appointments (such as online services or apps), we recommend using these options, wherever possible, while the phone lines are experiencing technical difficulties.

📱 you can check your local GP practice's social media or website for updates specific to your area.

Practices apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding. 🙏 We hope this is resolved soon.

Please help spread the word to friends and family—especially those who may not be online or using social media to make them aware.
Thank you 💚💙

So it’s still … but as our earlier posts on this haven’t gained much traction, let’s try something different.

We're just going to take a quick look at just a few of the potential negative consequences of smoking and maybe this will inspire someone, somewhere to pause and think about what’s really going into their lungs...

🫁 Lung damage – Smoking destroys lung tissue and reduces lung function, leading to chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and COPD.

❤️ Heart strain – It raises blood pressure, narrows blood vessels, and increases the risk of heart attacks and stroke.

🧠 Reduced oxygen flow – Carbon monoxide from ci******es replaces oxygen in your blood, so your organs and muscles get less of what they need.

🦷 Mouth and throat damage – Causes gum disease, tooth loss, and significantly increases the risk of mouth, throat, and tongue cancers.

🧓 Faster ageing – Reduces blood flow and collagen in the skin, causing wrinkles and slower healing.

🧬 Cancer risk – Linked to 15+ types of cancer, including lung, bladder, pancreatic, and cervical cancers.

👶 Fertility and pregnancy – Can reduce fertility and cause complications during pregnancy, affecting a baby’s growth and health.

💸 Financial cost – Beyond the physical toll, a pack-a-day habit can cost thousands of pounds each year.

The good news? Your body begins to repair itself within hours of quitting — and free NHS support is available whenever you’re ready to take that first step. Good luck if you decide to embark on the journey to quit - at any time of the year 💚💙

Our Story ..

We are a three GP partner training rural practice located midway between Low Hesket and High Hesket on the A6.

We aim to provide personal and highly professional care to all our patients and their families in the locality. The surgery is fully computerised and safeguards storage of confidential information, repeat prescribing and all test results.

The surgery is also fully dispensing in which you can obtain all repeat prescriptions including vaccinations and holiday travel information.

The term ‘Training Practice’ means that from time to time the Practice enables final year medical students, Foundation Year 2 (F2) doctors and General Practitioner Registrars to receive insights into care and general practice.
