Having a baby can affect everyone differently. Sharing an experience can not just help you, but others too.
The strength Jade shows in her story is incredible.
If you have been feeling different since having your baby, please know it is ok to talk about this.
We have 7 weekly support groups, 5 are in person in North and West Cumbria, 2 are online and open to any mum who needs them.
As Jade's story highlights, the effects can last longer than the immediate year after birth, that's why our groups are open to mums throughout the parenting journey, no matter how old your child is.
You are welcome to say whatever you need to say with us, you are not alone.
This is Jade and her baby Penelope. Jade believed she had killed her daughter when really she was really suffering from postpartum psychosis π
Jade developed extreme anxiety shortly after giving birth to her daughter Penelope, now five, in December 2020.
She began having intrusive thoughts about Penelope being harmed by herself or others, before entering acute psychosis, which caused her to hallucinate that she had killed her daughter.
Jade was taken to a mother and baby unit and sectioned when Penelope was four months old, but her delusions left her believing that she had been taken to a prison for harming her baby π
She was given anti-psychotic drugs, and after a month on the ward, returned home, where she fell into a deep depression for two years, which she finally overcame with the help of therapy.
She said: βI was so scared about what was happening in my head, and was worried my daughter would get taken off me.β
Jade and her husband have decided not to have any more children, as there is a 50% chance that postpartum psychosis will happen again, if you have had it once.
Jade is now raising awareness of postpartum psychosis online, to help other women who have had similar experiences.
She said: βAfter I came out of the mother and baby unit, I looked online, and there was no one talking about postpartum psychosis in a way I could connect to.
βI felt like I needed to be that person, to help show mums that it does get better.β
Thank you for sharing your story Jade, we are so sorry you had to go through that but are glad to hear you are doing better β€οΈ
