Having a baby can affect everyone differently. Sharing an experience can not just help you, but others too.

The strength Jade shows in her story is incredible.

If you have been feeling different since having your baby, please know it is ok to talk about this.

We have 7 weekly support groups, 5 are in person in North and West Cumbria, 2 are online and open to any mum who needs them.

As Jade's story highlights, the effects can last longer than the immediate year after birth, that's why our groups are open to mums throughout the parenting journey, no matter how old your child is.

You are welcome to say whatever you need to say with us, you are not alone.

This is Jade and her baby Penelope. Jade believed she had killed her daughter when really she was really suffering from postpartum psychosis πŸ’”

Jade developed extreme anxiety shortly after giving birth to her daughter Penelope, now five, in December 2020.

She began having intrusive thoughts about Penelope being harmed by herself or others, before entering acute psychosis, which caused her to hallucinate that she had killed her daughter.

Jade was taken to a mother and baby unit and sectioned when Penelope was four months old, but her delusions left her believing that she had been taken to a prison for harming her baby πŸ˜”

She was given anti-psychotic drugs, and after a month on the ward, returned home, where she fell into a deep depression for two years, which she finally overcame with the help of therapy.

She said: β€œI was so scared about what was happening in my head, and was worried my daughter would get taken off me.”

Jade and her husband have decided not to have any more children, as there is a 50% chance that postpartum psychosis will happen again, if you have had it once.

Jade is now raising awareness of postpartum psychosis online, to help other women who have had similar experiences.

She said: β€œAfter I came out of the mother and baby unit, I looked online, and there was no one talking about postpartum psychosis in a way I could connect to.

β€œI felt like I needed to be that person, to help show mums that it does get better.”

Thank you for sharing your story Jade, we are so sorry you had to go through that but are glad to hear you are doing better ❀️

Diane is at the Cumbria CVS Volunteer fair in Workington today.

Available to talk about all our volunteer roles and how vital volunteers are to keeping our support groups running.

If you are interested in volunteering with us, you can find out more here: www.happymums.org.uk/volunteering

We are a safer recruitment organisation, which means we require an application, interview and training before you can start with us. This helps us to keep you and our mums safe.

Due to low numbers we have made the difficult decision to no longer run our Maryport or Harraby groups. This Friday will be our last Harraby group. We still have our Tuesday Morton Manor group every week and all our online groups running as normal including our Monthly online Diffability group for parents with children who have additional needs.
Unfortunately our Workington group is cancelled this week due to staffing.
Please keep an eye on our socials for information regarding changes to groups and where Happy Mums will be providing support around Cumbria.

Do you work with mums or mums-to-be? Would you like to know more about where they can get extra support?

Our support groups are all about the mums. But what about the people supporting them or referring them to us?

They don't get to experience how much of a relief it is to know you are not the only one with intrusive thoughts or struggling to get out of bed.

Whether you are GP suggesting talking therapies but know that the waiting list is long, or a health visitor wrangling referral thresholds.

Come and find out what all the fuss is about and join our 45min online peer support taster.

Happy Mums is a place where mums can get support without a waiting list, without needing a diagnosis or childcare and, most importantly, without judgement.

Come along with some things you've heard from mums recently (anonymised, of course) and hear how our groups support them - so you can refer with confidence.

One of the reasons we have our online groups on a monday is so they aren't affected by bank holidays and venue closures!

Join from where ever you feel comfortable - including from your bed if thats what works for you!

Happy mums - providing judgemental free spaces for mums, mums to be and those who identify as mums a place to say whatever they need to.

Easter Holidays are upon us and we have a few groups not running next week due to staff holidays or Venues being closed. Penrith, Workington, Maryport and our Carlisle Harraby group are all off but we are still running our groups online if you are in one of these areas and need some extra support.
