Shrove Tuesday, Pancakes & Counselling 🥞

As we mark Shrove Tuesday — or Pancake Day as most of us know it — I’ve been reflecting on how much it mirrors the counselling process.

Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday was about taking stock. Clearing out the cupboard. Using up what had been sitting there. Preparing for a new season.

Counselling can be very similar.

Sometimes we come into therapy carrying emotional “ingredients” we’ve stored away for years — old hurts, unresolved experiences, beliefs about ourselves that have gone unchallenged. They sit quietly in the background, shaping how we feel and respond.

Counselling offers a space to:

• Take stock of what’s there
• Gently examine what we’ve been holding onto
• Decide what still serves us — and what doesn’t
• Prepare for a healthier, more intentional next chapter

And just like making pancakes, it’s rarely perfect on the first attempt. Growth can feel messy. It can take practice. But with patience and the right support, something nourishing can emerge.

Shrove Tuesday reminds us that reflection and renewal are part of being human. If you’re feeling ready to clear some emotional space and move forward with greater clarity, counselling can be a good place to start.

Wishing you a reflective (and enjoyable) Pancake Day.

Thanks for reading.

For over 13 years, I've been privileged to support Children, Teenagers, Adults, Couples and Families, by helping them to improve their Mental Wellbeing. I retrained after a varied career in the Royal Navy and then worked in very high-pressured business environments where I became burntout. I had counselling which frankly saved my life and led to me to decide to change my career and pursue this vocation.

Counselling Minds is located just off Junction 35 of the M6, near to Carnforth and ideally located for easy access for clients from Lancaster, Morecambe, Carnforth, Heysham, Milnthorpe, Burton in Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Silverdale, Arnside and Kendal.

Half Term

It's a break for children, teenagers and education staff from being at work but it presents a logistical quandary for some parents, who have to juggle work and childcare.

The break allows families to spend time together if possible; much needed when often parents, carers and children can be like ships that pass in the night.

It can also be a time that places different stresses on families - parents who are not used to spending as much time with their children can find this week a challenge.

It can be costly to entertain children, let alone feed ever-growing offspring!!

There are different dynamics for everyone.

Everybody has their own story and one size does not fit all.

At the end of this week, some parents and carers will feel guilty because they are glad half-term has come to an end.

Others will be upset that their time with their children has ended for a chunk of time, until Easter.

Whatever your story is, your feelings are valid. They are your feelings.

I hope half-term is good for you, whether you are having time to detach from school or keeping your children occupied.

Thanks for reading, John, Counselling Minds.
