Is it possible to cleanse your lungs?

Lung cleansing techniques may benefit people who smoke, people who get regular exposure to air pollution, and those with chronic conditions affecting the respiratory system, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cystic fibrosis.

Breathing in air pollution, cigarette smoke, and other irritants can damage the lungs and even cause health conditions. Maintaining the health of the lungs is essential for keeping the rest of the body healthy.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), exposure to air pollution results in 4.2 million deaths worldwide each year. Cigarette smoking is the cause of death for 1 in every 5 people

As the lungs are self-cleaning organs, this means they can begin to heal themselves once exposure to pollutants stops

Young adults with higher exposure to household air pollution show worse lung function

A study conducted in South India adds new evidence on the detrimental effects of cooking with biomass fuel and respiratory health

A new study has evaluated the link between air pollution and lung function of young adults who had recently attained their expected maximum lung function. The study found that participants with higher exposure to ambient and household air pollution had worse results in lung function tests.

Passive smoking or second-hand smoke

Whenever you light a cigarette, or pipe, ‘second-hand’
smoke is produced.

Second-hand smoke is the smoke breathed out by you (the
smoker) and the smoke given off at the end of the cigarette
or pipe.

Second-hand smoke gives off over 4000 chemicals, 50 of which are known to cause cancers.

More than 80% of second-hand smoke is invisible and odourless.

When you have a cigarette your body emits toxins for up to 4 hours after you have finished the cigarette.

Second-hand, or passive smokers, are at risk of the same diseases as smokers - they just don’t have a choice.

Exposure to second-hand smoke increases your family and friends risks of contracting cancer, bronchitis, pneumonia, chest infections, asthma, ear infections, bronchiolitis and bacterial meningitis - to name but a few

Re-thinking your smoking situation

It must be the right time for you as an individual to want to do this for yourself,
otherwise the success rate is lower.

If you are unable to quit smoking, or are not ready (or in the right place mentally), then you could start by:

Making your home and car completely smoke-free. This means no smoking in your home or car (ever), not even when you are alone.

Encourage people that visit your home not to smoke there either.

These small changes will help to reduce the number of ci******es that you smoke and will help to improve your health and the health of your family and friends.

How does oxygen get into the bloodstream?

Inside the air sacs, oxygen moves across paper-thin walls to tiny blood vessels called capillaries and into your blood. A protein called haemoglobin in the red blood cells then carries the oxygen around your body. At the same time, carbon dioxide that is dissolved in the blood comes out of the capillaries back into the air sacs, ready to be breathed out.

Blood with fresh oxygen is carried from your lungs to the left side of your heart, which pumps blood around your body through the arteries.

Blood without oxygen returns through the veins, to the right side of your heart. From there it is pumped to your lungs so that you can breathe out the carbon dioxide and breathe in more oxygen.

The age at which someone can legally buy ci******es in England should rise by a year every year until no one can get them, a government-commissioned review has found.

The plans would create a "smokefree generation", with people under a certain age unable to buy ci******es and other to***co products in their lifetime - similar to New Zealand which has banned the sale of ci******es anyone born after 2008.

Raising the age at which people can buy to***co products, currently 18, is seen as crucial in order to reach the government's 'Smokefree 2030' ambition - defined as less than 5% of the population smoking - but the government is reported to be split over the plans.

The recommendation comes from a delayed review by Dr Javed Khan, the former chief executive of Barnardo's, which was released this morning.
