If you’re looking to slow down the build-up of ear wax, here are safe, evidence-based ways to help manage it 👂✨
What you can do
1. Leave ears alone as much as possible
• Avoid cotton buds, hair grips, tissues, or fingers.
• These push wax deeper and stimulate the ear to produce more wax.
2. Keep ears naturally moisturised (but not over-oiled)
• If your ears feel dry, using 1–2 drops of olive oil or medical ear oil once a week can help wax migrate out naturally rather than compacting.
• More often than this can actually increase blockage.
3. Manage irritation & inflammation
Wax production increases when the ear canal is irritated.
Common irritants include:
• Frequent earbud/headphone use
• Hearing aids without regular cleaning
• Repeated water exposure (swimming, showering without drying ears)
4. Let wax do its job
Ear wax is protective (antibacterial and moisturising). The jaw’s natural movement (talking, chewing) usually moves wax out on its own.
5. Dry ears gently after water exposure
• Tilt your head to let water drain
• Gently dry the outer ear only
• Avoid using heat or inserting anything inside the canal
What to avoid 🚫
• Ear candles
• Overusing drops unless advised
• DIY syringing
When wax keeps coming back
Some people naturally produce more wax due to:
• Narrow or hairy ear canals
• Skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis)
• Regular earbud/hearing aid use
In these cases, routine professional ear care every 6–12 months is usually the safest long-term solution rather than trying to suppress wax completely
