❄️ Winter Isn’t the Time to “Leave It to Grow” ❄️

Pet Owner Advice

Many owners think leaving the coat longer keeps dogs warmer in winter — but it actually leads to more matting, more moisture trapped in the coat, and more discomfort.

A healthy winter coat is:
✔ Clean
✔ Brushed through
✔ Trimmed regularly
✖ Not long, tangled or left to “grow out”

Regular winter grooming helps with:
• Preventing painful matting
• Removing salt, grit & debris
• Keeping coat insulation working properly
• Reducing snowballs between pads
• Maintaining nails & hygiene areas

The severity of mats. Mats are more than just a tangle in your dogs coat. A lot of people are unaware just how detrimental a mat is. Here is some knowledge on mats that will be quite the eye opener.
1. Mats pull on the skin.
2. They harbor bacteria, dead skin, debri and can smell.
3. They can create sores and wounds underneath.
4. Mats in the paw pads or armpits can change your dogs gait.
5. They are painful just existing. Creates bad blood circulation and can cause the blood to rush back to that area when removed. Hematomas. Bruising.

Removing mats:
1. Removing mats by brushing them out takes ALOT of time. And therefore costs more money.
2. Brushing them out still damages that hair.
3. Cutting them out can be dangerous especially if done by a non professional and will leave holes in the coat.
4. Clipping them out is still a lot of time, stressful and painful as the mats are pulled and tugged. It takes a very close (short) cut to get underneath mats to get them out. About 1/4 inch of coat will be left or bald spots.
5. When your dog needs the groomer to remove mats they are not set up for success. It is far more difficult to remain calm, comfortable and cooperative

My diary is now FULL up until Christmas 🎄

Also just a side note: if I offer you an appointment please try and respond as soon as you can as I sometimes offer the same appointment to multiple people, it’s a first come first served process I’m afraid as I can’t keep up with what I’ve offered to who 🥴

I love this groomer, her work ethos is the same as mine, giving the dog time and space when they are struggling with the grooming process.

Sending a dog home unfinished when they are struggling, isn’t a failure — it’s professionalism.

There’s no shame in stopping a groom early when a dog is clearly saying “I’ve had enough.” In fact, pushing on through stress signals only creates a shorter fuse next time. When we pause, regroup, and respect the dog’s limits, we protect their long-term welfare — and their relationship with grooming. Ending on a positive note is always the better investment.

Little Ozzy here has complex rescue history and big feelings about being handled, he made it very clear when he didn’t want something done — and when Ozzy says “no”, he means it. His adopters were fully informed about his grooming and handling issues, yet instead of being deterred, getting to know his behaviour only made them more determined to help him.

For dogs like Ozzy, there may never be a “finished” groom in the traditional sense, but there can be a safe, positive experience that he’s willing to come back to — and that’s what truly matters.

Meet Ziggy, when he first came in at 6 months old I couldn’t even brush him, he hated any form of being touched or groomed so I had a tricky job on my hands.
Fast forward to over a year later and he is a little superstar star being groomed, it took lots of time and patience and short sessions to get where we are today.
It’s never an instant fix with dogs but if you give them the space and time that they need it’s very rewarding to see them change and relax in my company 🩵

🌈 🕊️ Now this one really got me crying 😢, lovely Sid passed over rainbow bridge yesterday, he was another one of my originals from the start and I had a huge soft spot for him, he was such a character and loved coming in and being pampered.
He was so well known around Woodcote and will be missed by so many people, especially his owner Sue who will be devastated.
Run free dear Sid, I will miss you 💙 🌈

Lovely boy Sullivan the Bulldog came in for a groom at the weekend, he is very nervous of the dryer so I am working on getting him used to it in a nice, positive way without frightening him.
He did so well and went home a happy boy 💙
