🌺 Remembrance Day at Court House 🌺
Today we marked Remembrance Day together at Court House. This morning we held a special Communion service with a member of the team from St Andrew’s Church, and this afternoon Kristy treated everyone to some lovely poppy cupcakes for afternoon tea. We also watched Sunday’s service from the Cenotaph on television, and everyone wore their poppies with pride.
We had Shireen’s lovely poppy creation on display as we always do

We will remember them. 🌺

Court House is stepping out for Children in Need! 💛

Our very own Chris will be representing Court House Retirement Home tomorrow morning — taking part in the BBC Local Radio Three-Legged Walk alongside BBC Somerset’s Simon Parkin!

They’ll be tethered together from 10:15 to 11:15am in Yeovil, helping BBC teams across the country cover 1,000 miles for Children in Need. 👏

It’s all for such a fantastic cause supporting children and young people — and we’ll be cheering them on from Cheddar! 🎉

This is a *big* challenge - but it’s for such a good cause 💛
We’re doing a three-legged walk for BBC Children in Need, joining BBC radio teams across the UK as we attempt to cover A THOUSAND MILES. That’s about 25 miles each!

Simon and Mel will be pounding the pavements of Yeovil and Bridgwater - give them a cheer if you spot them 👏

🚂 What an amazingly fun and informative afternoon we had! 🚂

Francis and Suzannah from 'Museum To You' came to deliver their workshop in the form of a lively game – all about 200 years of GWR history.

They were brilliant hosts, and our residents absolutely loved it. There was plenty of whistle blowing and “choo-choo” noises, and the game had everyone involved and laughing. It’s been the talk of the home ever since they left!

I’m so proud of this wonderful team and delighted to be a part of Museum To You. Thank you Francis and Suzannah we are already looking forward to your next visit.

🌾✨ Absolutely amazing day at Court House – our very first Harvest Home! ✨🌾

We kicked things off with a nursery rhyme–themed fancy dress parade from the staff (brilliant costumes all round!) before heading into a hilarious sports afternoon. The egg-and-spoon race brought plenty of laughs (watch out for Lauren’s very questionable win 🤣🥚), the “two in a sack” race had everyone in stitches, and the apple bobbing was both hilarious and very wet. Of course, the tug-of-war was fiercely competitive and a real crowd favourite! 💪

To top it all off, we enjoyed a wonderful Harvest Supper prepared by Kristy – her scones, cakes, and sandwiches were absolutely delicious. 😋 A huge thank you as well to Julie for her magnificent floral displays, which made the day feel extra special. 🌸

I feel so very lucky to have such fantastic residents here at Court House, and I am incredibly proud of my wonderful staff team – their hard work, creativity and enthusiasm made the day such a success. 💛 It was also truly lovely and heart-warming to have residents’ families join us; your presence really makes it feel like we are one big family together, and that spirit of togetherness was felt throughout the day.

I’ve made a longer video capturing all the fun, and I’ll also be sharing separate clips and photos so you can enjoy them individually too. 📸🎥

Honestly, this has been my favourite day of the year so far. Thank you again to everyone who helped and joined in – we’ll definitely be repeating it next year, so book your place early! 🎉

✨🍹 What a fantastic afternoon we had creating our own special cocktails for residents and families! The ‘Court House Colada’ was definitely one of the favourites – just the thing to cool us down on a warm, sticky day.

We also mixed up something extra special – the Victory Sip 🏆 – in honour of Garth, one of our resident’s son-in-law, who has just proudly represented the All-Ireland Over-60s Hockey Team at the European Championships. After an amazing tournament, the team came home with a bronze medal 🥉 – such an incredible achievement!

Congratulations Garth & the team 👏👏

👉 Has anyone got any ideas for Courthouse cocktail names for our next event? 🍸✨

🍓 Strawberry Day at Courthouse! 🍓

This summer, we decided the Cheddar Valley strawberry deserved a day all to itself — and what a day it was!

From a fruity quiz and a sweet strawberry word search to staff dressed head-to-toe in berry-themed clothing, we went completely strawberries bonkers (and loved every minute of it!).

Our dining room was transformed with bright, summery decorations, and the kitchen treated us to a fantastic Strawberry Day menu. The runaway hit? Definitely the Pimm’s and Strawberry Trifle – a true taste of summer.

The celebrations ended on a high note when an unnamed Court House poet, cheeks as pink as the berries, treated us to their very own Ode to the Cheddar Valley Strawberry. A perfect finish to a perfect day celebrating one of our local treasures.

Here’s to Cheddar Valley’s finest fruit – until next year, strawberries! 🍓❤️

We had a great turnout for this week’s quiz, and it was a fiercely contested battle – but Kate emerged as our champion! 🏆

Chris kept us all on our toes with some interesting questions about TV game shows and general knowledge from the 60s, 70s and 80s. See if you can answer a couple of them…

📺 What was Bob Monkhouse’s catchphrase on The Golden Shot?
A) Say the magic word
B )Bernie the bolt
C) Lights, camera, action

⚡ What was the name of the first British nuclear power station opened in 1956?
A) Hinkley Point
B )Calder Hall
C) Sizewell B

One of the things we love about our quizzes is that it’s not just about getting the answers right – we also learn fascinating facts along the way. For example, did you know the famous black chair on Mastermind was designed by Swedish designer Fritz Hansen? It’s called the ‘Swivel Chair 300’, and was chosen by the show’s creator, Bill Wright, who was inspired by interrogations he experienced as a POW during WWII. Now that’s an interesting bit of trivia!

Today was our SEASIDE SUPPER CLUB 🍦 so we transformed the dining room with colourful seaside decorations — complete with our very own cheeky seaside postcards! “Does it really look like me?” 🤣

Angie’s fabulous menu went down a storm, especially the hand-cut chips served in paper cones with wooden forks — just like at the seaside! We did have to keep an eye out for those pesky seagulls who were clearly after our chips! 🐦🍟

We spent some lovely time reminiscing about childhood holidays. Many of our residents had very different experiences growing up during the war years, and it was so special to hear everyone’s stories.

Of course, no trip to the seaside is complete without a 99 ice cream — ours came with a flake, sprinkles, and plenty of smiles. All enjoyed while we listened to classic summer holiday tunes. 🎶

What a great evening!

🎲🥦🍅 Ready, Steady, Cook… Retirement Home Edition! 🍅🥦🎲

We had a brilliant afternoon at Court House today, bringing a dash of nostalgia and a whole lot of fun to our residents with a board game inspired by the classic 90s TV show Ready Steady Cook!

The game—kindly brought in by our wonderful chef Kristy—saw us split into two teams: the Red Tomatoes and the Green Peppers. With cookery and food-themed questions flying, it was a close contest right to the end… but the Green Peppers just edged out the win! 🏆

We love dusting off these old games and sharing them with our residents—there’s always laughter, memories, and just a dash of healthy competition!

If you’d like to know more about life here at Court House Retirement Home or are thinking about visiting, we’d love to welcome you and show you around. Just get in touch!
