What an absolutely cracking resource!!πŸ’ͺπŸ€“ I was lucky enough to pick one of these babies up before CoROM stopped printing them. It is full to the brim of super useful info and aide memoires for the remote medic!πŸ•

I use field guides like this when I'm working in remote locations and when I'm designing courses for WRM too! Information from resources like this is invaluable and ensures that my courses utilise the most up to date and relevant content.

I'll be honest though, I do think that printed versions are better than electronic for those working in austere environments. Batteries die, water breaks phones and other people can easily access a hard copy if the medic gets injured... The list goes on.

What do you guys think though, printed or electronic?

Cardiac arrest!! It's not a 'heart attack', the heart has actually stopped πŸ’”

There's lots of different CAUSES for this, one of which could be a heart attack. It could also be trauma, a bleed on the brain, choking... the list goes on. In children it is normally due to hypoxia (a lack of oxygen)

The person will be unconscious, they won't have a pulse, the won't be breathing/breathing normally. They need QUICK action.

Would you know what to do??

Defibrilation and chest compressions save lives!! In children rescue breaths are key⚑β™₯οΈπŸŒ¬πŸš‘

Swipe to see the correct way to do chest compressions. 30:2 for adults and 15:2 for children. (30 or 15 compressions to 2 rescue breaths)

Had a great day teaching Paediatric First Aid to the brilliant staff at Oxford Active. Everyone did well and got stuck in. We had some good fun with Covid safe practical scenarios, like head and spinal injuries and the learners got to perfect their sling techniques.

It was a small group (which is great for teaching) and everyone said that they'd learnt lots and had a great time.

Hopefully these guys never need to use the skills and knowledge that they gained on this course, but if the worst should happen they're now well prepared!! πŸ©ΉπŸ©Ίβš•

Well done everyone great effort πŸ‘πŸ˜ & remember if you need first aid/medical training for your company or group please just pop a message in our DMs!

When managing injuries/illness in the desert environment what are the key things you need to consider?

Heat illness, sun & dehydration! 🌑🌞 πŸ’§ yes you need to manage your patient and the presenting conditions but things will only get worse if you don't think about those 3 things.

1) Heat! Has your patients condition been caused by or worsened by the heat? How much water have they drunk? Check their water bottles/bladders. Have they been sweating? Are their clothes damp? Cool them ASAP.

2) Get everyone into the shade! If you can't move someone to it or there is none then make some! Shemaghs, tents, tarps, sleeping bags can all be rigged or held up to create shade

3) Remember to drink! If your patient is able to then keep up their fluids. Make sure your team are drinking. Evacs can take a long time, make sure you save enough for the trip out.

If you ignore points 2&3 then you'll end up at, or back at point 1. This doesn't just apply to your patient, it applies to your team. Take regular breaks, take off boots, allow people to cool off.

Remember if you don't take care of yourself and year team you'll find yourself with more patients on your hands.

Its these kinds of skills and this situational awareness that WRM aims to teach on all of its courses. We get you to think about the bigger picture when you're out in the wilderness and make better, safer decisions that will keep your team safe and give your patient the best treatment possible.

Would you know what to do if someone was choking?

Check the airway, lean the patient forward, 5 back slaps, reassess. If unsuccessful then progress onto abdominal thrusts, aka the Heimlich Manouver. Alternate between the two methods, remembering to reassess the airway to see if the item has been dislodged and don't forget... CALL 999!

The choking vest that you can see in this picture allows students to practice their back slaps and abdominal thrust techniques. They are great bits of kit and are used on all WRM training courses!

Choking is defined as the inhalation/ingestion of food or other objects that obstruct the respiratory tract. According to the ONS, on average 351 people die of choking each year in the UK. Normally an issue commonly associated with children, it is in fact the over 65s that are most susceptible! Children are also at risk however & choking is covered in both our FAW & EFAW courses, as well as our Paediatric FA courses.

Teaching my First Aid at Work (FAW) delegates how to do effective CPR.

Hand position, depth and speed are vital to performing high quality chest compressions.

WRM resus manikins have automatic depth and speed sensors which light up to indicate when students are doing it right, allowing them to learn more effectively.

Quick intervention with effective CPR has been proved to increase pre-hospital cardiac arrests survival rates. Would you know what to do?
