đź’ś Disability History Month begins today.

This year’s theme, Disability, Life and Death, asks us to reflect on how society values disabled lives. At Purple Tuesday, since accessibility is at the heart of everything we do we choose to honour that value by celebrating the innovations that have empowered disabled people for centuries.

Did you know the first typewriter was invented to help a blind woman write independently?

Accessibility isn’t new, it’s historic, radical, and transformative. And it’s shaped the tools we all use today.

Let’s start this month by recognising disabled ingenuity and the legacy of inclusive design.

Alt text: A vintage purple typewriter sits on a wooden surface. Below it, a caption reads: “Did you know? The first known typewriter (ancestor to the modern keyboard) was invented in 1808 by Pellegrino Turri to help his blind friend, Countess Carolina Fantoni, write legibly and independently.” At the bottom is the Purple Tuesday logo and tagline: “Accessibility Everyday, Everywhere for Everyone.”

Today is World Usability Day.

A reminder that true accessibility goes beyond ramps and lifts, it lives in our websites, apps, emails, and every digital experience we create.

At Purple Tuesday, we champion accessibility everywhere, every day, for everyone. That means asking the hard questions:

🔍 Is your content usable by screen readers?
🔍 Does it meet WCAG 2.2 standards?
🔍 Can everyone navigate it with ease and dignity?

Let’s build digital spaces that include, empower, and respect disabled users. Because accessibility isn’t an add-on, it’s a foundation.

The background is a gradient of purple shades. Text reads: “Purple Tuesday. Accessibility Everyday. Everywhere for Everyone. Is your content accessible? Today is World Usability Day. A reminder that true accessibility goes beyond the physical. Does your digital content meet WCAG 2.2?”

One week ago, we lit up Piccadilly. We lit up the sky. We lit up conversations.

But the real spark of was never in the spectacle, it was in the shift. The shift toward listening, adapting, and designing with accessibility at the core.

Since then, pledges have turned into plans. Conversations have turned into collaborations. And across sectors and borders, we’re seeing the ripple effect of what happens when inclusion isn’t an afterthought, it’s the starting point.

Whether its here in the UK, in the UAE, Oman, Jersey, Germany, Pakistan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Ireland or North America one thing’s already clear: this movement is growing, and it’s growing with purpose.

Let’s keep building. Let’s keep challenging. Let’s keep making accessibility the norm, not the exception.

Video Description: A global celebration of inclusion unfolds in this vibrant montage. It opens in London, where the iconic Piccadilly Lights beam messages of accessibility as Jamie Kerruish from Boots shares why the brand proudly sponsored Purple Tuesday this year. We then shift to Dubai, where Jessica Smith OAM PLY speaks on breakfast radio while purple-lit landmarks shimmer across the skyline. Back in the UK, Eden Addison Grocock reflects on her experience at the Piccadilly networking breakfast, sharing what Purple Tuesday means to her, as dynamic influencer content brings the day to life on screen. From dance performances in shopping centres to creators like Blind Toby spotlighting local accessibility wins, the energy is contagious. The montage closes with joyful snapshots of communities celebrating together, smiling, connecting, and championing change. The final scene features the No Horn Unicorn drone show above Westfield, where children, families, Dr Shani Dhanda, and Mike Adams gaze upward as magical forests and unicorns light up the sky, bringing a children's story of inclusion to life.

A few days later, all the decorations have been packed away and the team is reflecting on the incredible energy of the campaign. 🙌 We're so proud of the global impact we made together!

But this isn't the finish line, it's the fuel that will keep us going for next year! We’re already planning next steps to ensure the focus on accessibility and inclusion continues year-round.

Thank you again for joining us on the day. Let’s keep pushing for a better, more accessible future! 💜

The Purple Pound is now worth an incredible ÂŁ446 billion.

That’s £446 billion in spending power from disabled people and their households in the UK, and $18 Trillion globally yet many businesses still overlook accessibility in their business strategy.

Purple Tuesday is a call to action: not just to do better, but to recognise that inclusion is a strategic advantage.

Accessibility isn’t a compliance checkbox. It’s a growth opportunity, a brand differentiator, and a way to build lasting trust with millions of customers.

Let’s stop seeing accessibility as a cost and start seeing it as the future of business.
