Do you find your teeth get really sensitive when you’re outside — to the cold air, the wind — and you end up avoiding smiling or talking too much because it literally hurts?
Here are a few simple things you can do to reduce that sensitivity:
✔️ 1. Switch to a high-quality desensitising toothpaste. Look for ingredients like potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride. Use it twice daily, and try not to rinse afterwards — just spit out the excess so it keeps working.
✔️ 2. Avoid brushing too hard. Overbrushing can wear enamel and expose dentine. Use an electric brush with a pressure sensor and let the bristles do the work. No scrubbing.
✔️ 3. Cut down on acidic drinks. Things like sparkling water, fizzy drinks, fruit teas, and citrus can weaken enamel. If you do have them, avoid sipping over prolonged periods.
✔️ 4. Use a fluoride mouthwash — but not immediately after brushing. Use it at a different time of day to give your teeth an extra boost of fluoride protection.
✔️ 5. Ask your hygienist/dentist about in-chair treatments. Professional fluoride varnishes or desensitising gels can give fast, long-lasting relief.
✔️ 6. Check for underlying issues. Sometimes sensitivity is caused by recession, grinding, cracks, or decay — all things your hygienist or dentist can identify early and treat.
