A lovely time was had by all at Bay Tree Court on Tuesday (14th December) evening when Berkhampstead School came and sang Christmas Carol’s through the window! It was wonderful!

Over the last few months, one of our Independent Living residents and a daughter of a resident living in one of the bungalows have been working very hard on a new project. The project was initiated by the residents and now, after a lot of hard work, has been completed. Last Saturday, 31 July, we held an opening ceremony. The Garden of Contemplation, as the project is called, transformed an overgrown and untidy area near the Independent Living flats into a dedicated Sensory Sanctuary for all who live in the home. The ceremony was attended by the Independent Living residents, their families, Bernard Freeman, the director, his wife and Jane, Independent Living Co-ordinator. The ceremony started with unveiling of a commemorative plaque in the shape of a butterfly. After the speech of appreciation from Bernard, the guests were able to look at the completed project. The celebrations were followed by guests attending a small get-together in the Independent Living lounge. This was the first time in many months that we were able to have such a function and are hoping there will be opportunities for many more in the coming months. Thanks go to our Catering Manager and his team who prepared a delicious selection of foods for the occasion.

The weather is somewhat unpredictable at the moment. When it is fine, we still are able to enjoy it in our courtyard (and harvest some of our home-grown vegetables). When it is really rainy, there are things to do indoors. Len, for example, has been busy sanding down an old bookcase.

We are looking for a part-time kitchen assistant (18 hours per week) to join our catering team. Your role will be to support the catering manager and the cook by assisting with preparation of meals, washing up, cleaning the kitchen and the dining room, and delivering food to residents' rooms. We are ideally looking for someone with previous experience of working in a similar environment, although training will be provided to the right candidate. We are looking for a person who is able to work calmly under pressure and without supervision. Ability to demonstrate empathy towards the needs of older people, especially those who live with dementia, is essential. Hourly rate £8.99.

At weekends, we all like to have some quiet time every now and then. So do our residents. There are still opportunities, though, to meet with friends for a chat or to attend a cinema show arranged by Keith, one of our care assistants.

Every now and then the local branch of Sainsbury's in Oakley, Cheltenham, donate a selection of flowers to Bay Tree Court Care Home. Our residents love making small bouquets, which then are used to decorate their bedrooms or communal areas. Don't they look great?
