The Yoga Tree

The Yoga Tree Yoga & Well-Being Hi I'm Emma and this is my seasonal yoga page.

I am based in the beautiful Cotswolds and my aim is to bring the benefits of yoga to all those who can, all who wish they could, and all that just want to give it a go.

Winter is for resting

Just a little reminder if you feel like you’ve missed the momentum of new year and lunar new year ✨️

New year is still to come.

In Seasonal Yoga we take the beginning of spring as the true beginning of the year, when our energy and the energy of the world around us is rising.

Right now, the energy is not rising. My energy isn’t rising at least!

The beauty of living cyclically is that there are so many cycles to tune into. If you’re not ready to start afresh with a new month, try a new lunar cycle, a new week, a new menstrual cycle. Find what works for you.

And if you didn’t gallop with the Fire Horse last week, don’t sweat it, spring is coming. We’ll move then

New moon incoming

Tuesday is a big day - a new moon

And a starting point for us, but what are we starting?

I’m sure you’ve seen all the excitement online about Chinese New Year and the year of the Fire Horse, a time to gallop forward with certainty. Which feels very seductive, I’m ready to be carried away by the Fire Horse! 🔥🏇🏼

But if you belong to a different tradition, we’re actually moving into a cycle of deep stillness and reflection

🌚 This new moon marks the start of Ramadan - a time of fasting, reflection, community and deep empathy
🥞 By divine coincidence, Shrove Tuesday also falls on 17th marking the beginning of Lent, more fasting and reflection

So if you’re not feeling very Fire Horse on Tuesday, if you’re feeling more yin than yang, that’s OK. We’re still, still, in winter. And it’s OK to stay still for a little longer. What’s important is that you feel ready, not what a calendar tells you.

We started our year-long seasonal yoga teacher training with the nervous system ⭕️

Because before we talk about alignment, philosophy or sequencing, all that good stuff, we need to understand this...

Every student who walks into a class arrives in their own way, with their own context:

Some arrive activated - traffic, work, family, stress
Some arrive depleted - struggling to access energy at all

If we don’t understand the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, we’re teaching shapes but not supporting our students (and ourselves) with regulation

Seasonal Yoga recognises that we are cyclical beings.
🚀 There are times for activation
🛏️ There are times for restoration

Both are healthy and necessary. There is such a thing as good stress!

The magic is in our ability to move between them 🌈
This is why nervous system literacy is foundational, not just for yoga teachers, but for anyone wanting to feel more at home in their body.

Yoga isn’t “just” exercise, it’s supporting your self regulation.

Ask yourself in your own practice: what do I need?

Yoga = unity = community

When we think about yoga as unity, we usually mean it in terms of yoking together body and mind ⭕️

But for me, a huge part of yoga is the community, the unifying of a group of disparate people, all going through their own stuff, moving together, sharing their energy, becoming for that hour, that 90mins, one 🌈

One of my favourite parts about the Seasonal Yoga Teacher Training programme that we move through over the space of a year is forming a little community with the students, a little group that grows together and supports each other.

This year we have 2 assistants supporting the YTT - one graduate from 2025, and one from 3 years ago. Yoga creates a bond 🫂

If you’re looking for community, if you want to share, connect, laugh and cry with beautiful souls, I still have one room available for our Spring Retreat 🌸

Join us 20-23 April, Abergavenney

This weekend marked the beginning of our journey.

A new cohort of nascent Seasonal Yoga Teachers, the start of our year long training, seeds being planted for the future 🌱A new group of wonderful women, at different stages of their lives, at different points in their yoga practice.

Each weekend is SO full, just a taste of what we covered:

❄️A winter asana practice to prepare of bodies and minds for the days ahead
👩🏼‍🏫The ethics of teaching - etiquette, but what it means to be a teacher as well as a lifelong student
🪷What IS Seasonal Yoga - still the question I get asked the most
🫀Our para/sympathetic nervous system - more to come on this
💭Yoga nidra - what it is, why it helps us
🌬️Breathwork practice and teaching points for some basic asanas - already our students are teaching!

I’ll expand more on some of these in the coming days/weeks. Let me know in the comments if you have questions.

It is a huge privilege to guide students at the start of their teaching journey. Such a joy to learn from them and witness confidence growing. I want to take you with us this year, so stay tuned.
