Supporting Children’s Mental Health in Grassroots Football
Last night I had the privilege of delivering a workshop for the managers at Bishops Cleeve Colts — helping them recognise the early signs that a child may be struggling with anxiety, overwhelm, school stress or social difficulties.
For many children, these struggles don’t show up in words first…
They show up in behaviour:
⚽ Avoiding drills
⚽ Tears after mistakes
⚽ Frustration or anger
⚽ Difficulty with teammates
⚽ “I don’t want to play anymore”
⚽ Sudden loss of confidence
These aren’t “naughty behaviours.”
They’re signals — and when we understand them, we can support children before things escalate.
With over 600 children involved in Colts, the club plays a huge role in supporting local families, and it was inspiring to see how committed the managers are to children’s wellbeing.
If your club, school, or organisation would like a session on recognising early signs, supporting children, or working with parents, feel free to reach out.
