🌟✨ My Personal Journey with Dry Eye ✨🌟

Hello, everyone! I want to share my personal experience with dry eye and how it shaped my interest in dry eye care. In 2020, when we (The Optical People) acquired our first bit of advanced dry eye diagnostic equipment, I had a pivotal moment. I learned that only half of my meibomian glands (oil glands that keep the tears in your eyes and help keep them lubricated) were functioning and the other half was significantly compromised. Soon after I had my osmolarity (how salty my tears are) tested and it was alarmingly high. A trained optometrist and I had been dismissing my niggling symptoms as just part of ‘normal’ life. I knew that no matter how busy I was, I needed to prioritise them.

I realised I had been navigating my daily life to steer clear of triggers. Makeup often aggravated my eyes so I hardly wore it, and I avoided contact lenses entirely. My eyes often watered, my vision often variable because of this, I didn’t like bright lights and I often went to bed early because my eyes were tired. Even with these symptoms I didn’t realise how advanced my dry eye was until I had proper diagnostics carried out.

Today, I really recognise the transformation I’ve experienced. I benefitted from heat and massage therapy, gland expression, IPL and punctal plugs; all allowing me to regain control over my dry eye, in turn making life far more comfortable and giving me peace of mind for my future.

This week I went out skiing wearing makeup AND contact lenses… comfortably… for the entire day! The clarity of my vision, comfort of my eyes and no light sensitivity, allowed me to enjoy days on the slopes like I couldn’t have before.

It’s important to note that dry eye damage can take up to 15 years to manifest symptoms. Early intervention is crucial, and many only seek help when symptoms escalate in their 40s and 50s. Early intervention can lead to much more easily managed dry eye, significantly improved eye health in the future and most importantly a better quality of life.

🌟 Exciting news! Our first Blephasteam mask has found its new home! 🎉 Mrs. B, a dedicated member of our Dry Eye EyePlan, visits us every 3 months for professional heat and massage with our Activa device, followed by meibomian gland expression from our amazing optometrists. These treatments have been life-changing for her as she navigates Sjögren’s Syndrome.

While she’s always been great with her home care, she wanted to take it up a notch with a semi-professional device to enhance her routine between visits. We wish her all the best on her journey to better eye health and are confident she will love it! ✨

Let’s keep spreading awareness for Sjögren’s Syndrome and support those who are affected! There is so much available to help now and we are confident we can improve not only eye health and symptoms, but quality of life through the right care.
