So i went shopping the other day and i didn't notice that the perfume i picked was hidden under my baby's bag.
I usually use under the push chair as my π where i keep items i pick because i can't push shopping trolley and my baby's pushchair at the same time.
I only noticed the perfume when I reached home and i couldn't go back.
So the following week, i added the perfume to my items, paid and asked the cashier to keep it back.
I explained to her what happened the previous time and that i only picked it to pay for the last one i already started using at home.
I didn't know she recognized me the last time i did the same thing.
She was like ππ½
You are very honest and nice. The majority of our people would not come back to pay, once they leave the door uncaught. They would consider it their luck.
I was like no, i don't take what doesn't belong to me without paying. It's not right and my conscience would disturb me.
I completely understood where she was coming from.
An average oyibo is very camera conscious and the implications of their actions because of their law.
If caught at the door, they can easily review their cameras and nail you for stΒ£aling.
But if you succeed in leaving the shop uncaught, nobody has the time to go back to daily camera review to start checking if anyone picked an item without paying.
They are more of law abiding citizens because they were taught that right from childhood.
You don't have to be God-fearing to do some certain things because you know the implications if caught.
But many would do otherwise if cameras are not there.
So, i understood why she commended me for coming back to pay for an item that i mistakenly didn't pay for but wasn't caught.
A lot of cr!mes in Nigeria would stop if the law becomes very strict like here and cameras everywhere.
There is no sentiment when you are caught, no matter who you are.
But remove the law and cameras and you will see that some of them are not different from those agberos that claim that they are smart.
We need working laws that are above everyone no matter your political or financial influence.
Some would intentionally do wrong even as top Christians, with the intention of asking God for forgiveness and that would be all.
But if you know that there is a very strict consequence of your action by law without a chance to ask for forgiveness, you would think twice before doing it.
Have you ever been in that situation of going back to pay for something that nobody knows that you mistakenly had?
