Wednesday 19th was a very crafty day today at Oakland's! With a visit from Tulip and some needed guidance we got to crocheting (and sewing!) our very own Christmas baubles and Christmas pompoms!

Tulip joined us this afternoon and showed us some beautiful Christmas wool that she had crocheted into little hemispheres for us to sew up with a half treble crochet stitch around little styrofoam balls! Whilst some of us worked in teams to get a singular bauble done Tulip was speeding round the sun lounge teaching our residents how to crochet and getting a whopping three baubles done in the time some of us only got one done!

Giving Tulip a much needed tea break, we put down the crochet needles and picked up the childhood pass time of pompom making, though admittedly the set up was a little more wonky with our activities assistant having to do a bit of a mock up to make sure that she was doing it right! Once we got going though, we really got going though! With a natter and some hand weaving we made some pompoms, ready to be strung up alongside out crochet baubles!

These kinds of activities are important for the mental and physical wellbeing of our residents, helping to maintain fine motor skills and reliving childhood memories and experiences in ways that help them reconnect with family traditions they may not have taken part in for years.

Monday 17th November we were visited by Gill and Lesley for an afternoon all about Advent!

With an advent tree, our residents had each decoration and the biblical connection explained to them as we worked from Creation itself to the Birth of Jesus, stopping off with Moses' and Joseph and his technicolour coat! Rounding out a lovely conversational service we had a advent themed quiz and created our very own advent tree decorations in the form of Christmas stars and advent candles.

Our very own decorations will be seen dotted around Oakland's soon, as soon as the glitter dries!

This kind of time is important not only for our residents social lives but also to maintain a connection to their faiths and allow them to explore it if they didn't have one previously!

Sunday 16th we decided to make a start on our Christmas cake (pictured in the bowl above), and this year rather than a traditional ball shape we went with a wider victoria sponge shaped cake!

With a strong arm workout and a battle of wills to not take just a little taste ahead of time, it was a laugh filled, batter splattering good time! Activities like this are beneficial for our residents as they allow them to relive their past traditions and make new memories together whilst getting the Christmas cheer started just a little bit early!

Friday 14th was Claude Monet day and we had a arts and crafts afternoon to celebrate! Taking inspiration from the impressionist painters preference for flowers and natural landscape we tried our hand at a monet inspired piece of our own!

Our residents artistic abilities on full display this collaborative piece is a fun and colourful way to celebrate a wonderful artist like Monet who brought us such wonderful pieces like Ophelia, and provides quality time for our residents to talk together and maintain and develop fine motor skills alongside each other whilst having low energy fun!

It wasn't just the residents that our Dino friend visited today, any staff member she met in her path also became a friend on the path to seeing more of our residents!

November 12th was Dinosaur day here at Oaklands, and what better way to start it of than through a visit from an elusive and recently not extinct, Tyrannosaurus Rex!

Roaring through the place, the friendly Tyrannosaurus started her journey in the sun lounge, surprising our residents and coming round for a hug or a handshake from each of them to various responses, some initial surprise turning to excitement and some of our residents were very nonchalant in the face of their surprise visitor, and were incredibly fearless!

From the sun lounge the dinosaur made her way throughout Oakland's popping into see all of our residents and greet them a good afternoon!

Whilst the Tyrannosaurus made her rounds, in the Sun Lounge we made dinosaur themed cupcakes and talked all we could about our favourite dinosaurs and what counts as a living dinosaur! Crocodile, yes! Elephants, not so much!

Today, Monday 10th November, in preparation for the 11th November and Remembrance Day, we made Remembrance Day art.

Using cutouts of soldiers and poppies we made a Remembrance Day collaged artwork, featuring a cross of poppies and silhouette soldiers, some filled in with glitter and some left mere outlines, representative of the ones who did and didn't come home.

Making this over the course of a few hours, and using lots of glitter, glue and pastels soft enough to leave our hands stained for hours afterwards it was a lovely afternoon spent speaking about memories of days gone past whilst making our art. We spoke about the war, being evacuated, food we used to eat and how things taste now compared to the good old days. We also spoke about how we would like to make some of the old stuff like corned beef hash and bread and butter pudding which made us all very hungry.

Sunday 9th was Remembrance Sunday, marking the 106th Remembrance Sunday since the end of World War 1 and the 80th Year since World War 2 ended.

As we have the past couple of years on Remembrance Sunday, we have a soldier for people to take home with them (pictured above), either as a symbol to help focus any prayers they may make on Remembrance Sunday or Remembrance Day itself but also to serve as a little reminder in their pocket of the brave men, women and animals that have served throughout the years to protect our country.

For Remembrance Sunday this year we watched the televised Remembrance Sunday Cenotaph Parade and took our minutes silence.

For as sad and horrifying as the roots of this day are, it's incredibly important that we never forget the horrors of war, and the unimaginable toll it takes on our soldiers, the civilians caught in the middle and the people left home, lest we repeat something many of our residents grew up through and we never want to repeat.

Saturday 8th of November was a good old fashioned Saturday afternoon, filled with boardgames, puzzles, dominos and a good game of "What's in the bag?".

Days like this serve as calm communal time for our residents, time to engage together socially without the constant interruption of more involved activities like arts and crafts or activities like when Andy comes to sing for us that means there isn't as much time to just sit together and chat. Games of "What's in the bag?" And Dominos are important for our residents because they help refine fine motor skills and critical thinking skills for our residents. After all, our residents are all razor sharp when it comes to winning a game of dominos so it's a time to really test your mind at the sun lounge dominos table!

Board games and puzzles encourage and refine the same skills and reflexes, with competition and pattern recognition being the ones right at the forefront.

Happy bonfire night!!! πŸŽ‡πŸŽ‡

Today was our Bonfire Night extravaganza! We've had facts, we've had singing, we've had fireworks! We've had all in all, a BLAST!

Spending earlier in the afternoon learning all about Bonfire Night and the Gunpowder Plot that started it all, we had a laugh and good old natter about what caused the infamous events all those centuries ago. Then, we moved onwards to singing, performed for us by the amazing Andy who even graced us, after request, with a early 'Im Dreaming of a White Christmas' before we tucked into our dinner, anticipation for the fireworks quickening quite a few appetites!

Once everyone was finished and the room rearranged for better viewing the fireworks were set off and how beautiful they were! (As you can tell, from where they're pictured above) With a resounding cheer at the end of the fireworks we would say it's a brilliant success and that we can't wait to do this again next year!

Monday 3rd November saw out monthly church service with Gill and Lesley. This month's theme was remembrance- a theme paramount to November in more ways than one.

With a beautiful alter laid out before us and church hymns familiar to us all we had a wonderful service and our own home grown choir performance to end out the service.

Faith, in whatever form it takes for people, is important to respect and offering people the chance to participate in group worship is something we at Oakland's want to provide and protect for our residents as we believe this is something that helps connect our residents together and (unironically enough) connects them to memories of days of worship gone by. Coming together in prayer, whatever that means to each individual resident, is something we should always aspire to keep part of the monthly routine for our home, given how important it has been for our residents growing up and living their lives and we want to respect that and help them not loose touch with something they've always held quite close to their hearts.

Sunday 2nd November was an arts and crafts afternoon, using pastels and smudging to make some truly interesting expressions of autumn and bonfire night on the 5th November!

Arts and Crafts are a brilliant low energy social activity for our residents, letting them have vibrant colourful fun and enjoy conversation over a slow paced and relaxed activity that lets them express themselves in individual ways!

This kind of activity encourages fine motor skill use and mental skills associated with artistic ability without making the residents feel like they're flexing those specific muscles, and is perfect for our residents.
