Addiction ~ Itβs among the loneliest of diseases, impossibly difficult to explain to those uninvolved. As someone once asked ~ , βwhat other recognised illness has the strength to separate mother and child? What other illness do you get shouted at or imprisoned for having?β
Addiction is almost a full-frontal issue of national public health in the UK and the US.
Also : Other countries are currently tackling it better than the UK and US.
Addiction has a higher mortality rate than the most deadly of cancers.
Who comes out of a cancer treatment facility requiring ongoing care for months, probably years, with little or no support, emotional or financial ?
Many with addiction do. Even those with jobs and families are usually expected to return to normal life almost at once, as though rehab has been a miracle cure.
Few look after their loved ones assets while they are in treatment - unlike cancer or a road accident.
Those homeless on discharge due to no fault of their own as they have been seriously ill, are at high risk of relapse or dying of homelessness or they will likely return to addiction as a result.
These are not always street addicts but include hard working people - teachers, bankers, doctors , the clergy and housewives among the statistics.
There are few resources available and the UK/US is reaching critical breaking point with this deadly brain illness.
It may not be the responsibility of the family, although it is certainly known by all now to be a family illness, almost always with familial causal factors.
Left to the state, people with addiction problems including alcoholics are dying by the thousand daily. Most of these deaths are preventable.
The illness goes on long after the substance has been quit. 1- 3 months in rehab may save a life but is far from a cure.
Latest research figures reveal that more people die soon after leaving a treatment facility due to lack of support after , than ever before ~.
