Being heard is not only a right but an important part of improving patient care.

Our Call 4 Concern service is here for immediate worries about a patient who is currently in our care.

If you are worried about signs of deterioration — in yourself or a loved one — and feel something isn’t being picked up, Call 4 Concern allows you to ask for a clinical review at that moment.

You can find out more here: https://www.coch.nhs.uk/patients-visitors-and-public/call-4-concern.aspx

A note about comments:

We know posts about speaking up can sometimes prompt people to share difficult past experiences of care. That’s completely understandable.

However, this post is specifically about how to raise urgent clinical concerns in-the-moment through Call 4 Concern, so we’ll be switching comments off to keep things focused.

If you have concerns about a past episode of care or non-urgent matters and would like to talk to someone, please contact our PALS team, who handle complaints, feedback and support after care has taken place:
📞 01244 366066
📧 cochpals@nhs.net

They can listen, support you and ensure your experience is reviewed properly.

💗 Supporting new mums through cancer treatment 💗

This spring, we’re launching a new project that will ensure mums in Chester who need to pause breastfeeding during cancer treatment can still give their babies safe, donated human milk.

When chemotherapy or radiotherapy means breastfeeding has to stop suddenly, the Cherish project will offer families comfort, reassurance and a way to continue giving their baby the benefits of human milk at a time that can feel overwhelming.

Supported by The Milk Bank at Chester, as well as the South Central and West Child Health Information Service and charity Mummy’s Star, the Cherish project is about ‘compassion, dignity and making sure no family feels forgotten’.

Pictured here: Our wonderful Milk Bank team who have been working hard on this brilliant project.

Families often know when something isn’t right.

Call 4 Concern gives patients and loved ones a direct way to speak up and request an urgent clinical review if they’re worried about deterioration. It’s part of how we’re delivering Martha’s Rule at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

A year on from launch, we’re now able to share how the service is being used locally.

Not sure where to turn? Here’s how to choose well:

🩺 NHS 111 – If you’re unsure, start here. Call or go online for expert advice 24/7. They’ll guide you to the right care – pharmacy, GP, urgent treatment centre or A&E if needed.

💊 Pharmacy – Your local pharmacist can help with common illnesses. No appointment needed, confidential advice provided.

🏠 Self-care – Many minor issues can be treated at home with rest and over-the-counter remedies. Keep a well-stocked medicine cabinet.

👩‍⚕️ Your GP – For ongoing symptoms, prescriptions, chronic pain or long-term conditions. They can also refer you for specialist care.

🚨 A&E – For life-threatening emergencies only.

Right care, right place. Help us help you.

*If you are feeling unwell with cold, flu, or respiratory symptoms, we kindly ask that you postpone your visit to loved ones in hospital.

We’re extremely proud to share that Claire Slater, an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in our Acute Medical Division, has been named a national finalist at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2026! 👏

Claire is one of just ten finalists in the Learner of the Year: Post Registration category and will attend the awards ceremony in London on 24 April.

Nominated by Liverpool John Moores University, Claire was recognised for her outstanding progress during her postgraduate apprenticeship studies in Advanced Clinical Practice - consistently achieving top grades, representing her cohort, and excelling in her role here at the Trust, all while overcoming significant personal challenges.

Claire’s nomination also follows her quick thinking during an off‑duty emergency in August 2024, when she delivered lifesaving CPR to a member of the public until emergency services arrived.

Claire described it as 'an incredible honour' to be nominated, and the recognition 'means more than I can say'.

Please join us in congratulating Claire on this fantastic achievement - and wishing her lots of luck for the ceremony 👏👏👏
