Happy New Year to you all! I hope you had a great Christmas and enjoyed your break away, although it’s back down to earth with a bump today! If you are fighting the January blues, on the first working day back for many, then up your Folate levels found highly in the foods below. Folate helps regulate our ‘happy hormone’ called Serotonin, so regulates mood and behaviour. A deficiency in folate can cause fatigue and low mood. High alcohol consumption has also been shown to deplete folate levels in the body, so if you over did the ‘grape juice’ over Christmas, then even more reason to tuck into some folate filled foods!

A real ‘superfood’ these little seeds can be eaten in many things and provide a variety of essential nutrients. They are also high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which many people can be low in, so start adding them to your diet and reap the health benefits.

A new study published in the ‘The International Journal of Oncology’ (2015), shows that some homeopathic medicines produce apoptosis (cell death) in cancer cells. The study particularly looked at the effects of homeopathy in lung cancer and outlines the possible potential of homeopathic medicines to have a role in the treatment of patients suffering various forms of carcinoma. Hopefully more positive research will follow!

Aspartame is probably the best known artificial sweetener out there, yet its apparent safety is still in question. There are still many recent research studies showing it has negative consequences on health, especially if used in large amounts and from an early age. A lot of the studies showing its scary effects are done on rats, so ok we can’t be sure that it will have quite the same effects in humans, but if it’s not good enough for rats, it sure isn’t good enough for me (or you)! Found in many products that are sold as diet, slim line and sugar free, it’s also known as the E-number E951. I see many people in clinic who have an intolerance to this and it can be responsible for headaches, migraines, digestive problems, numbness, dizziness and extremity pain. Could your symptoms be caused by this too?

Too hot to handle? Chillies really are underused in cooking, yet provide so much goodness they ideally should be part of our daily diet. If you can’t handle the heat, then buying fresh MILD chillies will still give you some great health benefits and chopped finely into your meals, smoothies or soups you won’t even know they are there!

Onions may not be something you associate with helping boost immunity, but they should be. Most of onions immune boosting benefits can be attributed to the antioxidant called Quercetin. Red onions are best, so get out that chopping board and have the tissues at the ready!!

So for those with children, it's back to school this week and if you are in charge of packed lunch making, but lacking inspiration, then read this and make a great, healthy, varied packed lunch that will be devoured http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/zgr4kqt

School meals are healthier than ever before, but are kids packing a lunch getting the same benefits?
