When you’re living with diabetes, it can feel like you’re constantly checking one thing or another. Blood glucose levels, medication, food choices – it can be a lot. So, adding in a bunch of extra appointments might feel like the last thing you want to do.

But your diabetes health checks – also known as your annual review – are vital. They’re a set of routine tests that look at important aspects of your health, including your average glucose levels, blood pressure and cholesterol, along with checks on your eyes and feet.

Here’s the thing. Last year, more than 1 in 3 people with diabetes in England and Wales missed at least one of their recommended checks, and whilst they might not always feel like the biggest priority – especially when you’re keeping on top of everything – we know that issues related to diabetes can start long before you notice any symptoms.

That’s why these health checks are so important. Because they help to spot early changes so that you and your healthcare team can act quickly. Early treatment can reduce the risk of serious complications like sight loss, kidney disease, heart attack and stroke.

It's vital that everyone with diabetes gets their regular diabetes health checks. We’ve got lots of information about them, what they mean and why they’re so important, along with free downloadable resources to help stay on top of your checks each year.

World Obesity Day, 4th March

On World Obesity Day, we’re taking steps to reduce the prevalence of weight concerns and the associated long-term health risks.

Childhood obesity is rising rapidly – particularly among children of primary school age. It leaves them with life-long risks, such as a greater risk of issues such as diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. Now is the time to take action. How do we help?

• Increase exercise – think about joining a club or team
• Get out for walks with your family to increase your steps
• Choose snacks such as fruit and raw vegetables instead of processed foods
• Control portions at meal times
• Aim for five portions of fruit and vegetables per day

It can be really difficult to discuss weight with a child, particularly when you may have concerns about their self-perception, so it can be useful to reach out for support.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common types of cancer for both men and women in Northern Ireland. It is more common in older people, especially men.

Screening is aimed at people without symptoms, and will help determine whether you need to go for further tests. It can also pick up pre-cancerous polyps so these can be easily removed and reduce your risk of developing bowel cancer in the future.

For more info on bowel cancer and screening, visit www.nidirect.gov.uk/bowel-screening
