Tuesday Talking Tips- Following Interests to Spark Communication 🌟
Children learn and communicate best when they are genuinely interested. Paying attention to what captures their curiosity creates natural opportunities for engagement and language 💛
This week’s focus: Interest-Led Communication
Research shows that children are more motivated to interact and express themselves when activities are centered around their interests. Some children may be fascinated by cars, animals, or textures, while others may enjoy routines, songs, or imaginative play. Studies also highlight that forcing communication around topics that don’t interest them can reduce motivation, lead to frustration, and limit meaningful learning.
Interest-led communication is about joining a child in their world. By noticing what excites them and following their lead, we create natural opportunities for interaction, language development, and social connection 🌱
Try this:
🔎 Observe what captures their attention and join in
🗣️ Comment on what they are doing, seeing, or exploring
🎲 Expand on their play, sounds, or words to model language
⏸️ Pause to allow them to respond or initiate
👏 Celebrate every attempt to communicate, big or small
✨ Why it works:
🙌 Increases motivation and engagement
🙌 Supports spontaneous language and communication
🙌 Encourages curiosity and exploration
🙌 Builds confidence and meaningful connections
🌟 Tip: By entering a child’s world through their interests, we turn curiosity into communication and play into learning 💫
