This Sabre Wasp has caught a whiff of our Giant Horntail visitor last month. They are a parasitic wasp and have quite a gory way of feeding their young, don't read on if you are squeamish!

The Sabre Wasp can smell the larvae of the Horntail wasps in the wood. The Sabre wasp then lay its eggs near these larvae so that its young can eat the larvae!

If you are wondering how such a delicate looking insect can bore into wood, they have a layer around their ovipositor (the bit that lays eggs) that contains Zinc and magnesium metal!

We have some stunning slabs of Beech milled from a veteran tree on the Hardwick Estate. The tree came down in a storm in 2019 and was around 170 years old. The planks have been air dried for two years. Length vary between 4 to 5 foot in length and 10- 16 inches in width. All are around 2 inches in thickness. Prices start from £30.
