This is the Troxler Effect. If you stare at the center cross for about 15 seconds without moving your eyes, the colors will slowly fade into a solid white background.

Why does this happen?
Your neurons are actually "tuning out" the unchanging stimulus to focus on new information. It’s the same reason you don't "feel" your clothes on your skin after you’ve been wearing them for a while!

If the colors didn't fade, or if you’re finding it hard to focus, your eyes might be working overtime or you could have dry eye? Come see us for a check-up! 👓

As we enter 2026, would you like to get out and meet people more, as well as making a difference to local people? We may have the volunteering role just for you!

Our Mobile Resource Centre volunteers go out and about across Derby and Derbyshire providing access to information and support around sight loss and good eye-health in garden centres, village halls, libraries, retirement villages and many other places. Full training and support is provided.
