What are Platelet Rich Plasma injections and how are they used?

PRP involves the processing (‘spinning’) of a patient’s blood to produce plasma which contains 3-5 times the normal number of platelets. PRP has been shown to help stimulate healing and repair within the tissues of the body.

The process requires some blood to be taken from a patient (usually a vein in the arm) which is then spun very quickly in a specialist piece of equipment known as a ‘centrifuge’. This causes the blood to separate into a range of parts depending upon thickness and weight.
PRP injection treatment is a process whereby the PRP is injected into the site of injury in order to trigger the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Research has consistently demonstrated that this enriched PRP has a regenerative effect on the tissues of the body by triggering natural healing processes. PRP injections are delivered under ultrasound guidance to the area (normally a joint or tendon) of pain to ensure that the PRP reaches the exact area to be treated.

PRP injections are often recommended for people with osteoarthritis of the knees and other joints. They can also be used in a range of other soft tissue conditions such as tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis which involve pain and degenerative changes identified on scans.
Most research shows that a series of 3 PRP injections each 1-2 weeks apart provides the best outcome. Therefore, we typically offer a treatment programme consisting of 3 PRP injections.

Having trouble with ingrowing Toe Nails?

Partial Nail Avulsion

Partial nail avulsion is a very effective and commonly used operation for treating ingrown toenails.
A local anaesthetic is used to numb your toe and the edges of your toenail are cut away. A chemical called phenol is applied to the affected area to prevent the nail growing back and becoming ingrown in the future.
A course of antibiotics may be prescribed if your nail is infected, and any pus will be drained away.

Total Nail Avulsion

Total nail avulsion may be necessary if your nail is thick and pressing into the skin surrounding your toe.
After your toenail has been removed, you’ll have an indentation where your nail used to be. However, it's perfectly safe for you not to have a toenail.

Verrucae Treatment

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a minor surgical procedure carried under local anaesthetic for the treatment of stubborn verrucae. It has a reported success rate of 60% however, as with all verruca treatments results cannot be guaranteed.

The procedure involves the use of a fine needle to puncture the verruca lesion multiple times. The goal is to implant infected cells into the dermis thus stimulating an immune response and, therefore; destruction of the human papilloma virus responsible for the development of verrucae.

One huge advantage over other treatments such as cryosurgery and caustics is that only one session of treatment is usually needed. If you have multiple lesions then still only the “mother lesion” needs to be treated as a systemic immune response is initiated.
There is no evidence that suggests using this technique can spread the virus further.

Injection Therapies
All our injections are performed under ULTRASOUND guidance for accuracy and local anaesthetic to make the procedure as painless as possible.
Injection therapies are used to treat a number of foot and ankle conditions. They can be used in conjunction with other conservative treatments or when conservative treatments have failed. The most common we treat include:
 Big toe joint pain (Hallux Rigidus/Hallux valgus)
 mid foot/instep and ankle joint Arthritis
 Heel pain/plantar fasciitis
 Achilles Tendinopathy and Retro Calcaneal Bursitis
 Mortons Neuroma
 Capsulitis
 Sinus Tarsi Syndrome
 Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
 Other tendinopathies (Peroneal and Tibialis Posterior Tendons)

We offer two types of injection therapy:

1) Steroid injection also known as (Cortico-Steroid)
These are potent anti- inflammatory agents which target localised inflammation in soft tissues and joints of the foot and ankle and are very effective in providing pain relief.

2) Ostenil Plus Injections
These contain hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate) naturally found in synovial joints responsible for lubricating the joints. It helps to restore the body’s synovial fluid’s lubricating and shock absorbing properties. It reduces pain, swelling and stiffness.
