We fall silent today for Armistice Day, but do you know why?

The Armistice, an agreement to end the fighting of the First World War as a prelude to peace negotiations, began at 11am on 11 November 1918. Armistice is Latin for to stand (still) arms. To this day we mark Armistice Day around the United Kingdom with two minutes silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month.

Today, Rememrance Day, is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have defended our freedom. Thank you to everyone who supported the poppy appeal and who will give honour today at the memorial services around the country.

We are very fortunate to have the services and support of Ashgate Hospice within our community. They can make such a difference to both individuals and families alike and their work is so much more than what happens on site at Ashgate itself. Please give them your support if ever you have the opportunity.

This Hospice Care Week, we’re shining a light on the care that happens not only inside our hospice walls, but out in the community through services like our Virtual Ward. The service allows people with a palliative diagnosis to remain in their own homes while being supported by a team of specialist nurses, doctors and therapists.

Helen Bell talks about the round-the-clock support her husband, Ray, received from our Virtual Ward and the comfort the service brought to him in the final months of his life.
