JE Nicholson Funeral Directors

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Britland of Grangewood, who passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by all her loving family.

Margaret was known for being wonderfully straight-talking — she said what she meant and meant what she said. Above all else, she was devoted to her family. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the centre of her world, and she took immense pride in each and every one of them.

She leaves behind a family who loved her dearly and who will carry her strength, honesty and warmth with them always. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Margaret’s funeral will take place on 25th February at 11:30am at Boythorpe Cemetery, where she will be reunited with her beloved husband, James Barry Britland.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with her family at this difficult time.

🌹 The Unknown Warrior — A Symbol of Every Sacrifice 🌹

On this Armistice Day, we remember not just names carved on stone, but also those whose names were never known.

In 1920, two years after the guns fell silent, one fallen soldier — identity unknown, rank unknown — was brought home from the battlefields of France. He could have been anyone’s son, brother, husband, or father.

Chosen at random from four unknown soldiers, his coffin was carried across the Channel aboard HMS Verdun, and on 11 November 1920, he was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey — among kings, statesmen, and poets.
He was buried in soil from France, beneath words that still move the heart:

“Beneath this stone rests the body of a British warrior unknown by name or rank, brought from France to lie among the most illustrious of the land.”

For grieving families who never had a grave to visit, the Unknown Warrior became every soldier. A symbol of all the brave souls who gave their lives and whose stories ended far from home.

Today, as we pause in silence, we remember him — and through him, we remember them all.

At J E Nicholson Family Funeral Directors, we join the nation in honouring the service, sacrifice and courage of our armed forces — past and present.

We will remember them.

We invite our community to join us in a two-minute silence at 11:00 am as a gesture of respect and gratitude. Let us reflect on the freedoms we enjoy today, given at great cost.

🕊 In Loving Memory of Glynn Stewart Twigg 🕊

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Glynn Stewart Twigg, of Wingerworth, aged 73 years. A lifelong resident of Chesterfield, Glynn was well-known and respected throughout the community.

Glynn spent over 40 years working as a skilled mechanic, proudly repairing and maintaining all kinds of vehicles. He had a love of music and reading, enjoyed his Land Rover magazines, and was always up for a good pub quiz. He also had a great understanding of the internet and enjoyed keeping up with the world around him.

He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Janet, who sadly passed away in 2021. Glynn now leaves his loving sons Darren and Daniel, along with all who knew and loved him dearly.

A service to celebrate Glynn’s life will take place on Thursday, 30th October at 10:50am at Chesterfield Crematorium.

💙 In Loving Memory of Stephen John Harris 💙

It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of Stephen John Harris, of Holmewood, Chesterfield, who sadly passed away at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, aged just 29.

Stephen was a proud lifelong Chesterfield lad, known for his kind heart, sense of humour, and love for life. He will be remembered for the things that brought him joy — fishing, darts, dominoes, poker, birdwatching, playing Airsoft with his mates, riding his bike, and enjoying his favourite video games.

He leaves behind his loving mum and brother, his devoted partner Lauren, and his beautiful daughter Lottie, who was his world. Stephen will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A service to celebrate Stephen’s life will take place on Saturday, 18th October at 11:10am at Chesterfield Crematorium.

All are welcome to join his family and friends in remembering a wonderful young man gone far too soon.

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Mr. David Michael Allen, of Wingerworth, aged 81 years.

Born on D-Day, 6th June 1944, at Willersley Castle, Cromford near Matlock, David later made his home in Wingerworth. He worked as an instrument technician at the Avenue Plant until its closure, before running his own plumbing and heating business alongside his son, Dave, until his retirement in 2004.

A devoted Derby County supporter for 65 years, David also enjoyed holidays, walking, time at the gym, reading cryptic crosswords, and most of all, cherished moments spent with his family.

He leaves behind his beloved wife Liz, son Dave, daughter Debbie, stepson Steven, sister Minnie and her husband Mick, along with his much-loved grandchildren Andrew, Rebecca, Matthew and Bethany.

David’s funeral will take place at Chesterfield Crematorium on Friday, 24th October at 12:10.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs Jacqueline Ann Lister, of Wingerworth, who has died aged 69.

Born in Chesterfield and a lifelong local resident, Jackie was a much-loved hairdresser for 45 years until her retirement. She will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and the joy she found in walking, horse riding, travelling, and skiing.

Jackie leaves her devoted husband John, her son Matthew, daughters Joanne and Danielle, and her six cherished grandchildren.

A service to celebrate Jackie’s life will take place at Chesterfield Crematorium on Friday 3rd October 2025 at 2.30pm.

In Loving Memory of Mr. Terry Cooper

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Mr. Terry Cooper of Brampton, a lifelong and much-loved resident of Chesterfield.

Terry began his working life at Ashgate Loggings, later joining Lidl, and more recently worked as a self-employed industrial cleaner. Known for his hard graft, quick wit, and warm personality, Terry left a lasting impression wherever he went.

A devoted supporter of both Chelsea Football Club and Chesterfield FC, Terry loved a bet—any day of the week—and never passed up the chance for a holiday abroad. But above all, he was a true family man who found his greatest joy in spending time with his wife, daughter, grandchildren, and close friends.

Terry leaves behind his loving wife Vanessa, daughter Lauren, and beloved grandchildren Nevaeh and Harrison. He will be remembered with deep affection by all who knew him.

A funeral service to celebrate Terry’s life will take place at Brimington Crematorium on Friday 6th June at 11:50am, followed by a gathering in his honour at The Old House pub, Newbold.

There is no dress code—please wear whatever you’re most comfortable in. And if you happen to own a pair of Adidas Gazelles, feel free to wear them in tribute to Terry and his much-loved collection.

Rest easy, Terry. You’ll never be forgotten.
