👣 Foot Condition Spotlight: Chilblains 😣

As colder weather sets in, chilblains become more common. These painful, itchy areas appear as red, shiny areas on the toes (sometimes fingers, ears, or nose) due to inflammation of small blood vessels when skin is exposed to cold.

Common Triggers:
❄️ Cold or damp conditions
🔥 Rapid hot-to-cold temperature shifts
🚬 Smoking
🩸 Poor circulation or underlying health conditions

While there’s no miracle cream to fix chilblains, managing the symptoms is crucial.

Here’s what helps:

✔️ Keep feet warm with soft, layered socks.
✔️ Avoid re-warming the skin too quickly, don’t press feet directly against heaters.
✔️ Wear slippers indoors and supportive shoes with thicker soles outdoors.
✔️ Change damp socks immediately.
✔️ Moisturise daily to prevent dry skin and cracking.
✔️ Stay active to improve circulation.

Padding and dressings can help to insulate and protect, but avoid sticking anything to broken skin. If symptoms worsen or skin breaks, consult your GP or podiatrist.

Takeaway: Chilblains are best managed by keeping feet warm and avoiding extreme temperature shifts.
Prevention is your best defense!

🩺 Whole-Body Health & Your Feet
Spotlight: Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Did you know your vision can directly affect your foot health and safety?

AMD is the leading cause of sight loss in the UK. It mainly impacts the central vision, making it harder to spot uneven surfaces, steps, or objects on the ground, which increases the risk of trips, falls, and injuries. It can also make everyday foot care more challenging, and is a very common reason people visit the clinic for professional chiropody care.

The Macular Society supports people both nationally and locally, and can be an important lifeline at what is often a frightening or stressful time. Through personal circumstances, and seeing first-hand the impact of vision impairment on foot care, the Macular Society has been my chosen charity at the clinic for many years. Small change donations are always welcome to help support the vital work they do.

👉 Please share this post to help raise awareness of AMD, how it can affect daily life, and the support available. Together, we can help more people stay safe, informed, and supported.

Healthy Diet – Supporting Foot Health 👣

As the New Year settles in and the Christmas indulgences fade, many of us start thinking about how to feel better and look after ourselves — including our feet.

What we eat plays a big role in foot health, helping to support strong bones, reduce inflammation, and aid healing. Staying well hydrated matters too.

The NHS Eatwell Guide is a great visual reminder of what a balanced diet looks like and how simple choices can support overall health — including foot health.

🦶 If you’re experiencing foot pain or slow healing, it may be worth looking at your general health and lifestyle alongside foot care. Healthy feet really do start from the inside out.

❄️ It’s cold out there!!! 🥶
The perfect time to stay in and give your feet some love 👍

Try the 5 simple moves in this post to strengthen and mobilise your feet
Small effort = big difference 🦶 😃

Five game changing moves which proved to be successful for so many in 2025!

Trust us, your feet will feel amazing. Maybe not right away, but stick with it, and you’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner!

Elevate your daily foot training routine and make it a habit that your feet will celebrate. Bookmark this post as your monthly reminder!

Pro tip: These movements can be mixed up in any order and will only take 5-8 minutes a day with practice.

1. Toe Stretch: Use a band to gently stretch and align your big toe. Feel the tension release as your foot relaxes.

2. Ball Rolling: Roll a ball under your foot from heel to toes. Increase the pressure as you get more comfortable, and for an extra challenge, lift your toes while rolling.

3. Pain Management: Find any sore spots and press with your thumbs for 20-30 seconds while gently moving your toes up and down. It might sting a bit, but it’s part of the healing process.

4. Toe Splay: Use your fingers to spread your toes apart, or focus on separating a few at a time. Marvel at how your feet become more flexible and free from the confines of shoes.

5. Top Foot Massage: Massage the areas between your toe bones with your fingers or thumbs. Start from the top and work down to the joints, encouraging your toes to spread and break free from years of tight footwear.

Commit to these moves for just 14 days and feel the difference!

👣 Foot Condition Spotlight: Bunions

A bunion (hallux valgus) forms when the big toe drifts outward, creating a bony bump at its base. They can also appear on the outside of the foot (tailor’s bunion).

Why do they form?

A combination of factors including genetics, footwear, foot structure, walking mechanics, history of injury or in association with certain inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Common symptoms:

• Pain or swelling
• Pressure in shoes
• Corns or callus

Whilst they are known to worsen over time, small habit changes can help ease discomfort and support better foot alignment

What helps?

👟 Wide toe-box shoes and limit heels to parties 💃
💪 Foot strengthening & mobility exercises
🦶 Massage and the use of rollers and toe spreaders
🚶‍♂️ Mindful walking and calf stretches
🩺 Padding or pressure-relief support
👟 Supportive footwear or orthotics for short-term relief

💡 With the right self-care and early professional support, bunions don’t have to limit your comfort
