Even in birth outside the medical system, all of my clients have wanted to ✂️cut✂️their baby’s umbilical cord.
There’s a simplicity and efficiency to it. A familiarity that “that’s what’s we do”. For it to be done so that all other things can be gotten on with - whatever that means.
But my goodness, was my first experience of witnessing burning of the cord completely different medicine entirely.
As I held that candle, mother to the left of me with naked baby in arms, father and sibling to the right of me, did that long pause and silence feel NEEDED.
The whirlwind and intensity of birth was still vibrating through all of us. A mother and father (and birth worker!) struggling land from the surge of energy and adrenaline that only post birth can bring. An experience firmilar to so many people.
The cord burning FORCED us into silence, into reflection, into deep breaths, into contemplation of - wow, that really all just happened didn’t it.
Knowing that our cord burning box was lovingly made by who himself has witnessed and understands the power and sacredness of undisturbed and peaceful birth at home, was the real cherry on top 🍒
The quality and the base made from 200 year old wood felt ancient, ancestral and just downright beautiful ✨
I have to say, I never thought I’d love burning the cord so much - I’m excited for all the babies ahead that this box will welcome 🧡
