15 years of this amazing human 💛💛💛 To say I am proud of her doesn’t come close. I don’t know anyone else like her. She’s brave and adventurous and loves trying new crazy things but she also loves just staying home and burying herself in her books and dog snuggles. She is sweet and tough at the same time - both thoughtful and fierce. She has the kindest soul of anyone I know and yet won’t hesitate to call a di****ad out and swears like a fisherman. She’s loyal and brave and strong and funny and I have had the best 15 years with her in my life. Happy Birthday to my lady baby. Thank you for choosing me. Xx

How many of us have ignored the signs of stress taking its toll, only to end up face down in a mental or physical illness as a result? You can’t out run this stuff, we know that, so why are we still so reluctant to get help before we hit rock bottom?

The answer is nuanced and complicated but I think that social conditioning has a lot to answer for. The cultural narrative is strong when it comes to ‘pushing on through’ and ‘just getting on with it’.

However, it’s clear from the sobering statistics on mental illness that this ‘stiff upper lip’ s**t is not serving us - we’re dropping like flies.

I think change has to come from each and every one of us, owning our part in the cover up. We need to acknowledge how and when we champion ‘coping’ and ‘cracking on’ over speaking up when things feel s**tty. How we advocate for good mental health while simultaneously overworking ourselves into stress induced depression.

I know it’s hard to stop, to slow down and even harder to ask for help but you have to, for all our sakes. Because when you do, you give everyone around you permission to do the same.

I leant the hard way that ‘coping’ wasn’t an Olympic sport and I wasn’t going to get a medal. Instead I got depression and a stomach ulcer… I also leant that it wasn’t heroism to just keep going. In fact it was the opposite.

If you recognise yourself in any of these words, here’s what I hope you will do - speak it. Tell someone you trust that you don’t feel great. Sometimes just breaking the silence can go a long way. And don’t forget, you’re not just doing it for you. You are doing it for all of us watching who will be inspired by your courage and strength to do the same.

Here’s the perfect end of summer salad for you… It’s lean, it’s green, it fibre and protein packed and is the perfect multi tasker. Originally taken for the Leon Happy Salads Book (my most used recipe book ever) it’s become a bit of a legend in our house. I’ve made this for retreat day clients, family BBQ’s and everyday dinners and it delivers EVERY time!

What’s more the main ingredients can be kept frozen or in the store cupboard (peas, beans, edamame and quinoa) and the rest can be pulled together from whatever you have in the fridge.

I’ve chucked in diced cucumber, asparagus tips and mange tout on different occasions - all work well. Just keep the edamame and the peas because they are the stars at providing protien here and give the salad its wonderful texture.

The dressing can be as simple as oil and vinegar mixed together or as fancy and you like using whatever herbs you have. A French Vinaigrette works very well and I often use a shop bought one if I’m short of time. (Yes, shop bought, shock, horror! Because it’s not the end of the world and it’s ok to outsource any barriers to better eating overall!)

I eat this with prawns mixed in or with a salmon filet on the side usually which makes a balanced meal for me. It can totally be eaten on its own as it’s quite filling but I like to bump up the protein a bit more.

Save this for when you want a crowd pleaser salad with leftover potential. It’s perfect for the summer to autumn transition as half way between light and hearty!

Please let tag me if you make it and let me know your thoughts.

Who doesn’t love pancakes for breakfast? But traditional recipes aren’t the healthiest way to start the day as they tend to be high in simple carbs and low in protein & fibre.

Getting protein and fibre into your first meal will set you right for the day. This is because it protein & fibre help slow the digestion of the carbohydrates, which promotes a healthy blood sugar response and keeps your feeling full up for longer. A full tummy and slow release of sugars into the blood with keep your energy levels balanced too.

Your gut microbiome will be happy with these pancakes too as they contain oats, yoghurt and silken tofu - all ingredients that your gut bugs LOVE!

Also the recipe is super easy!

INGREDIENTS
For 2 servings / 6 pancakes:

2 eggs
110g Oats blended to flour
2 tsps baking powder
175g (half a pack) Silken Tofu
120g High Protein Natural Yoghurt

Optional blueberries & lemon zest.

I topped mine with another 50g of yogurt, blueberries & a drizzle of honey

METHOD
Blend the oats into flour consistency first. Add the eggs, baking powder, tofu yoghurt and lemon zest if using. Blend again into a thick batter. Add blueberries if using and dollop heaped tablespoons of the mixture into a medium hot, oiled frying pan. Spread into disc shapes if the batter is too stiff to pool. Leave to puff up and look firm enough to flip (2 mins approx) and then flip and cook until golden brown.

Stack and serve and feel satisfactorily smug in the knowledge that this utter decadence is also ready good for you!

Let me know if you make them! Tag me and share the joy 💛

Post christmas we are bombarded with advice about our health & wellbeing more than at any other time.  According to a quick scan of my feed this morning I should be:
Getting morning sunlight, fasting until lunch (but not exercising fasted) Eating protein with every meal. Cold plunging & using a sauna at least 3 times a week.  Exercise snacking throughout the day & weight training 3-5 times a week. I should only be eating plants (or was it only eating meat??) whilst wearing a glucose monitor to balance my blood sugar.  I need to prioritise sleep but I should be up at 5am to create a successful morning routine & frankly, to fit in all my wellness protocols. And don’t forget to make time for the journaling, meditating, daily yoga & finding your life’s true purpose because WTF are you playing at if you don’t?

The irony does not escape me that, as a health coach, I advocate for many of these protocols myself. I have even tried most of them at one time or another.  So I speak from experience when I say… bo****ks to it.

To be clear, I’m not saying bo****ks to your health, obviously not.  Nor am I suggesting that you give up completely, lie on the coach and eat the family sized biscuit selection.  This isn’t the path to enlightenment either.  But the truth is, we KNOW what is good for us and what isn’t. If we stop scrolling long enough to listen to our bodies then we won’t need Huberman or Attia to spell it out for us. We won’t become overwhelmed with the huge amount of wellness information (and misinformation) out there because we are listening to what’s IN HERE.  Our own inate knowledge about what works for us. And yes, that may be different to Susan in accounts who’s evangelical about CrossFit or Brian from yoga who swears by the 5:2 diet.

If you’re confused about what’s best for your health, my best advice is stop polling pop culture for answers and start listening to that voice inside. It’s called your intuition and it’s got your back.

Don’t stop striving to be better but do it intentionally not reactively.  Try some stuff out.  Let your body tell you what works for you & what doesn’t (it will if you tune in).  Just be still and know.

My first visit to the our new local beach sauna and am officially a fan! It sits right on the beach overlooking the ocean. A beautiful spot inside and out (it really is amazing inside 💛). We’d planned a plunge in the sea between sauna sessions but the sea was too rough. No matter have this covered with an outdoor cold shower to cool off in but to be honest just jumping out into the cold air also does the trick and it feels INCREDIBLE to go from hot to cold!

The health benefits are what first got me interested in saunas and I seriously looked at getting one put in my back garden for a while! But in addition to being good for your health, it is also just a lovely thing to do. Sitting and chatting while watching the waves crashing with no phones or other distractions, just people and nature and warmth - what’s not to like?
Plus your vascular system is getting a workout, win-win 🙌

So happy that Chichester now has its own beach front sauna. If you’re local to Chi, pop down to Bracklesham and check out Rewild Sauna. It really is a wonderful experience ✨

Around the world today people are posting their eyes shut selfies to raise awareness for . The campaign was created to address the shortfall in the government resources for mental health.

There is nothing I support more avidly than this. Personally and professionally I see over and over again how poor resourcing and lack of funding for mental health is negatively impacting every aspect of people’s lives.

Mental health is the epicentre of wellbeing, without which no other part of us functions properly. To overlook, brush aside and deprioritise mental health is, in my opinion the biggest failing of our current medical model.

Thankfully the science is now showing quite clearly what the woo woo has known all along - that the health of our brain: our emotional and mental health, and our physical wellbeing are inextricably linked. With his book ‘Brain Energy’ Dr Chris Palmer is rewriting the medical model when it comes to how mental health conditions should be defined and treated. He says: “Metabolic and mitochondrial
dysfunction/ dysregulation is the only framework that integrates all known biopsychosocial causes of mental illness. This understanding holds the potential to completely revolutionize how we treat mental illness.”

His theory is certainly supported by my lived experience. At 25 I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and told I would be on meds for the rest of my life to compensate for the ‘chemical imbalance’ in my brain. At the time I was not looking after myself - drinking, drugging, smoking and eating crap and but none of this was taken into account when assessing my mental health. As I began exercising and eating better I noticed that the my mental health was improving simultaneously. So much so that, after a while, I was able to completely come off the medication I’d been told was a lifelong prescription.

It seems so obvious. We know food affects our weight, blood sugar, heart health, liver health, and even how long we live. What wouldn’t it affect our brains too?

Yet the narrative that ‘diet doesn’t play a significant role in mental health’ endures. I will keep banging a drum for until that changes.

Happy International Chocolate Day! 🍫

What’s even better than chocolate? Chocolate for breakfast of course!

These epic little pots of chocolate joy have been keeping me going over the last few (very busy) weeks. The recipe takes 20 minutes and makes four so they are the perfect food prep breakfast. Make a batch, stick them in the fridge and just grab and go.

Not only do they taste like a decadent treat, but nutritionally they rock, with 25g of protein and 11g fibre to fill you up and keep you going until lunch (312 calories per pot).

I used silken tofu to boost the protein but if you can’t get it or aren’t keen, replace this with extra yoghurt. If you don’t like raspberries, swap out for any other berries, fruit or a drizzle of peanut butter, nuts or seeds. Get creative, don’t let one or two ingredients put you off, tinker around and tweak the recipe to find something that works for you. I wont be offended! 😉

If you make them let me know. And I’d love to hear of any improvements you make!

What’s it all about?

I started this page because I kept meeting women like me who are trying to juggle jobs, kids, and family and feel like they have nothing left for themselves. Strong, brilliant women who’s heath and fitness has taken a backseat to everything else - to whom exercise has become either a stress or just another thing to make them feel guilty about not having time for.

I understand now that I can’t have it all. We are fed this line when we are young and optimistic but its bo****ks. You can be anything, you just can’t be everything. You have to choose whats’s most important. I have to choose and I have learnt that sometimes I have to choose me. My sanity, my health, my fitness. Because without them I’m not good for anything else.

I am not a fitness professional - I am not a personal trainer or a nutritionalist - I’m a real person, probably a lot like like you, who has struggled with my body image most of my life, who has fallen in and out of love with exercise and who basically wants to find a way to be happy, heathy and live long enough to be able to run around with my grandkids without sucking the fun out of my world. Over the years I have made pretty much every mistake going when it comes to looking after my body. But I have learnt a lot from those mistakes and I am the sort of person who gets excited and wants to share my discoveries.

So here it is, a page for all you incredible women who have spent their lives battling their own body image in one way or another and who are trying to find a way through the minefield of misinformation out there to a fitter, happier stronger self. Body and mind.
