Yesterday a patient decided that our OCT and Optomap machines needed names. So allow us to reintroduce….
✨Ethel and Fred✨
Ethel is our OCT machine and has been with us for 7/8 years, faithfully scanning hundreds of macula’s and optic discs. She is incredibly thorough and hard working, assisting our opticians in studying cell layers in minute detail for changes in structure.
Fred is our Optomap machine and the new kid on the block, joining our pre-screening room in late 2024. He will take high definition photos of the back surface of your eyes but only if you’re in the perfect position (if you’ve had Optomap photos taken before you’ll know what this means!)
Sadly our visual fields machine is still without a name so if you can think of a name that’d fit well with Ethel and Fred please send in your suggestions 😁

It’s maybe not the weather you think of when it comes to buying sunglasses, but this time of year is actually perfect for updating your sunnies 😎
The sun (when it’s out!) is very low in the sky and can be particularly dazzling when driving, especially if the roads are wet ☔️
Sunglasses also tend to be larger than your everyday glasses and can provide a buffer against cold winds. Your streaming eyes will thank you 🙏🏼
Also getting your sunnies ready in the cooler months means no mad rush to order them in time for summer holidays 🌞

Current favourites in our masculine frame collection 🥸
This round metal by modernises a classic shape with texture, structure and a glittering gunmetal finish 🪙
frames are perfect if you want something a little different than the norm. The acetate here is clear with tiny pinpricks of black, which in itself is fun, but the olive green stripe adds a bright pop of colour 🫒
designs are always creative and we especially love this deep blue metal frame, backed with postbox red and featuring wooden arms as well as Morel’s innovative hinge design 🪵
Which is your favourite?

An Optomap photo potentially saved our patient’s sight 👁️
The patient attended a routine sight test with additional photos and OCT scans. All very run of the mill but our optician Helen noticed something unusual on the Optomap, way out in the periphery of the patient’s eye. She referred them for further care and it turned out the patient had Coats disease.
Coats disease is a rare condition affecting blood vessels in the back of (usually) one eye. The abnormal vessels can leak, trapping fluid underneath the retina which can lead to a retinal detachment. If this occurs in the central retina (the macula) this can cause significant change to the vision of the affected eye.
In our patient’s case the damage was quite far from the macula but they received treatment to prevent further damage.
According to Helen it was lucky our patient went ahead with using the Optomap, which takes ultra-widefield photos of the inner eye, as the damage was in a spot not generally seen by ophthalmic equipment.
If you would like to book a sight test including Optomap photos and OCT scans please get in contact with us ☺️
(The photos used in this post are not of our patient but are from a case study on the Optomap website)

We’ve been rushed off our feet recently; 2026 is looking busy! 🤩 here’s a very quick peek at a couple of the new frames gracing our shelves.
’s frames look as if they change colour from different angles, due to the thoughtful combinations and layers of acetate in each pair. The first frame pictured looks yellow but is in fact a sandwich of violet and chartreuse 🔮🪲
come up with such fun and creative designs! We particularly love the cheetah print pair, the pattern of which actually comes from fabric which has been incorporated into the acetate of the frame 🐆
are known for their flair for pattern, bringing a bit of Italian style to Chichester 🇮🇹 this frame is so fun! Chunks of red yellow and blue floating in clear acetate but tempered by a thin layer of grey, making them wearable for everyday 😌
All gorgeous and all worth a try when you’re next at the practice!

A familiar face popped in to collect her new glasses today! 👀
Sara has loved these chunky frames from afar for a while and decided to take the plunge. The shape is fabulous but the apricot tortoiseshell? Gorgeous! 🧡🍑🧡
