The Youth Fairy Chichester

The Youth Fairy Chichester Solution Focused therapy for children, teens and young adults I am an LGBTQ+ friendly therapist.

Hello πŸ‘‹ I'm Julie, therapist at The Youth Fairy, a growing team of solution-focused therapists who help children, teens and young adults struggling with anxiety, stress, anger, emotional control and low confidence. We use modern, brain-based approaches, including Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy, that actively encourage young people to:

🧚 Re-focus on the positive aspects of life
🧚 Recognise strengths
🧚 Improve quality of sleep
🧚 Engage more in positive activities
🧚 Engage more in positive interactions
🧚 Feel more emotionally in control

I work with children from 7 years old to young adults and am able to adapt my approach to work with those with additional needs, special educational needs, disabilities and neurodiversity. Areas I work with include:

β€’ Anxiety
β€’ Stress and overwhelm
β€’ Low mood
β€’ Anger management
β€’ Social anxiety
β€’ Low self-esteem
β€’ Low confidence
β€’ Emetophobia (fear of vomiting)
β€’ Agoraphobia
β€’ Exam anxiety and stress
β€’ Trauma
β€’ Self-harm
β€’ Sleep problems

I was drawn to the solution-focused approach because it places children at the forefront, empowering them to recognise and harness their remarkable strengths. It minimises the need to dwell extensively on past trauma or problems. Instead, it centres on identifying how they aspire to feel, behave, or cope differently, ultimately guiding them towards a more positive future.

🌟About Me 🌟

Before my life as a Youth Fairy, I worked for many years in the Education sector and as part of my role I mentored young people who were experiencing difficulties. I also worked as a coach on government funded programmes, working with people and families experiencing a wide variety of issues in their lives such as grief, financial difficulties, depression and anxiety, helping them to regain their confidence and transform their lives. With this experience behind me, I decided to train in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy; I had noticed that when people were talking about how they would like things to be, they became more motivated and positive, just thinking about the steps they would take to achieve a better future.

🌟 Next Steps 🌟

🧚 Before a young person decides if they would like to work with me, I offer a complimentary, 1-hour initial consultation, which is an opportunity for you both to meet me to discuss best hopes.

🧚 As well as helping young people make positive changes, educating them on their well-being is something I know to be an important part of the change process.

🧚 So, in the consultation, I’ll explain to you and your child how the brain works (in an age-appropriate way) to create their specific problems and associated feelings, behaviours or symptoms and how I can help.

🌟 This understanding can be really motivational to children as they realise there is hope, see more clearly what we can do about it and supports them in developing more positive, healthy habits for life.

🌟 This knowledge is super helpful for you as a parent too - it allows for greater understanding, creates a common language to talk more easily with your child about their well-being and gives you specific ideas of how you can best support the process (and beyond). You’ll also get my relaxation audio download to help improve any sleep problems they are having and support the process. 😴😴😴

I hold an up-to-date Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate and am proud to be a member of the following professional bodies:

β€’ National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH)
β€’ Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH)
β€’ Complementary and National Health Council (CNHC)
β€’ National Board of Modern Psychotherapy (NBMP)

✨ New Blog ✨ Today is Stress Awareness Day, so we are spotlighting PTSD and specifically PTSD in children and young people.

PTSD stands for Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder, and it is a condition that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic life-threatening event or serious injury.

Most people recover from a traumatic incident without it affecting their mental health.

PTSD has a specific set of symptoms which last for longer than a month and which interfere with day-to-day life and for which help is available.

Some examples of traumatic events may include:

πŸ˜” assault
πŸ˜” road traffic incident
πŸ˜” natural disasters such as fire
πŸ˜” child abuse
πŸ˜” witnessing domestic violence
πŸ˜” war
πŸ˜” acts of terrorism
πŸ˜” traumatic childbirth

Did you know that trauma can be experienced vicariously as well?

Have you ever watched an episode of β€˜You’ve Been Framed!’, and winced when an accident inevitably occurs? There is an evolutionary survival mechanism at play here.
We are hard wired to avoid dangers in life! 😲

Children will react in a variety of different ways after a trauma. Directly after a traumatic event, young people will often feel:

πŸ’” frightened
πŸ’” distressed
πŸ’” in shock

Most people will show some short-term distress when exposed to a trauma, but over time the trauma fades to memory, at times hurtful, but no longer a cause of distress.

This week’s blog explains:

πŸ‘‰ What PTSD is and how to spot the signs
πŸ‘‰ How it manifests in our young ones
πŸ‘‰ How to best support your child

⭐️ On the Blog ⭐️

Our blog this week aims to help remove the stigma and raise awareness of what self-injury is and to help encourage individuals, their families, and friends to recognise the signs and seek the right support.

Sadly, self-injury is more commonly performed by teenagers and young adults and is often very misunderstood. It is a serious behaviour that signals an individual is going through intense emotional pain yet, at the same time, has not developed strategies to cope in healthier ways.

Many people may be surprised to know that self-injury is often NOT performed with suicidal intent, but rather, is developed as a coping strategy for dealing with very intense feelings of emotional pain.

πŸ’› Not only is it often difficult to talk about for the individual concerned, but it can also be very distressing to deal with as a loved one or a parent of the young person affected. Opening up a conversation can be challenging, as can knowing where to turn to find the right information or support.

🧚 So, today, we are shining the spotlight on this very emotive topic. With greater understanding, we are in a much stronger position to support our young people through challenging times.

So, with that in mind, head on over to the parent pad and take a read of this week’s blog to find out…

πŸ‘‰ What self-injury is (and what it isn’t).
πŸ‘‰ Why young people might self-injure and what is happening in the brain to create these behaviours.
πŸ‘‰ How to spot the signs and support your child.
πŸ‘‰ Where to go for further help, advice, and support.

🌟 On the Blog 🌟

OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which is a type of anxiety disorder, causing the person to obsess over small things and compulsively perform certain rituals. The person struggling with OCD can feel compelled to carry out specific behaviours or rituals, having constant thoughts about them, even when they try really hard not to.

OCD can be caused by a variety of factors such as:

πŸ‘‰ Genetics
πŸ‘‰ Specific brain chemistry
πŸ‘‰ Environmental factors

The symptoms can be exasperated by:

πŸ˜” An increase in stress
πŸ˜” Anxiety
πŸ˜” or challenging, traumatic circumstances

The obsessive nature of this disorder is very much driven by the primitive part of our brain – whose primary concern is to keep us safe. OCD creates both fear and doubt and means that the person may at times seem to manage their compulsion in the moment (especially if they are working to cope in a social setting) but will then need to continually recall the events and doubt that they took the required action to keep themselves, or others, safe.

😬 The person feels, often subconsciously, that by doing these they are keeping the polar bear away. It’s not uncommon for the person to start to believe that not doing the ritual will result in something bad happening to them or a loved one.

πŸ˜” One of the challenges that people with OCD face is the need to fight both the stigma of mental health disorders and the widely held belief that OCD is a mild or even β€œquirky” problem that is nothing more than hand washing. Many people now use the term β€œa bit OCD” to describe an individual who is particularly ordered or organised, without understanding the debilitating nature of this disorder.

It is a serious disorder, however, that can severely impact a person’s quality of life. So, if you are concerned about a young person you love and care for, take a read of our blog in full to find:
