It’s hard to think about how life might be after a baby is born. When ‘how you have your baby’ seems to consume all your thoughts, there is little room for being with your baby.
Well, luckily there are hundreds of postnatal doulas across the UK who can guide you and help you plan for the weeks, months and year after birth.
Looking after a newborn is not supposed to be done without support. And when I mean support, I mean high quality support that does not come with any agenda. Family members might not be around, get too tired or bring unwanted dynamics to your door. It can be difficult for them to know what you really need or they may have forgotten what it’s like with a newborn.
You might need specific support - if your baby is premature, has additional needs, if you are having multiples, if you have a disability, trauma from a previous birth or postnatal experience, are solo parenting, are adopting, have a birth injury or need extra mental health support.
Postnatal doulas will talk through your needs and co-create a plan, help you make informed choices and navigate the rough with the smooth. They can tap into their communities and sources of information to bring you different perspectives and knowledge.
You might just want a companion, someone to sit and chat too, it can feel isolating when everyone is out and about - and you are home alone with a baby.
Tomorrow we will be showcasing what postnatal doulas do so you can get a clear picture of all the wonderful ways they can support.
