Why do you sometimes get goosebumps during a massage?

Have you ever noticed little goosebumps appear on your skin while having a massage? It’s actually a natural response – and a sign that your body is reacting to touch in a powerful way.

Here’s why it happens:

Nervous system response – Massage activates your parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest and digest” mode), which can cause tiny muscle contractions at the base of hair follicles – creating goosebumps.

Emotional release – Touch can trigger the release of feel-good hormones like oxytocin and endorphins. If your body is holding on to stress or tension, a massage can bring moments of release, which sometimes shows up as goosebumps.

Temperature regulation – As circulation improves, your body might briefly adjust temperature, leading to little shivers or goosebumps.

It’s your body’s way of saying: “I feel something shifting.” Many people find this sensation deeply relaxing – almost like the body’s version of a sigh of relief.

So next time goosebumps appear during your treatment, take it as a beautiful reminder that your body and mind are responding, releasing, and rebalancing.

Massage can be a gentle yet powerful support for people with hypermobility, helping to manage symptoms and improve overall quality of life.

Here’s how it helps:
Hypermobility means that joints move beyond the normal range due to looser or more elastic connective tissue. For some, it’s harmless, but for others—especially those with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) or Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)—it can lead to joint pain and instability, muscle fatigue or tightness, poor posture or coordination, frequent injuries or dislocations, and even nervous system overload or anxiety.

Massage can help relieve muscle tension and fatigue, as people with hypermobility often have tight, overworked muscles trying to stabilise overly mobile joints. It supports joint stability by relaxing overactive muscles and improving function in supportive muscle groups, allowing better control during movement. It can also improve proprioception and body awareness, helping individuals better sense where their joints and limbs are in space.

Massage reduces nervous system overload by promoting relaxation and supporting the parasympathetic (rest and repair) response—helping the body feel calmer and more grounded. It also improves circulation and lymph flow, supporting tissue repair and overall wellbeing.

Massage for hypermobility should always be adapted and gentle—avoiding overstretching joints or applying deep pressure to unstable areas. Slower, soothing techniques focused on comfort and client feedback are most beneficial.

Massage can be a wonderful tool for managing muscle pain, fatigue, and nervous system stress that often accompany hypermobility. With the right approach, it helps the body feel more supported, more balanced, and less reactive.

Reflexology & Nerve Pain – What You Need to Know

Nerve pain (often called neuropathy) can feel like burning, tingling, numbness, or sharp shooting pains. It may be linked to conditions such as diabetes, injuries, trapped nerves, or long-term health issues. Living with nerve pain can be exhausting — physically and emotionally.

Where reflexology fits in:
Reflexology doesn’t claim to cure nerve pain, but it can offer gentle support by:
✨ Stimulating the nerve pathways through the feet and hands.
✨ Improving blood flow and circulation, which helps bring nutrients and oxygen to affected nerves.
✨ Encouraging deep relaxation, which calms the nervous system and can make pain feel easier to manage.
✨ Supporting better sleep and overall wellbeing, which are often disrupted by ongoing pain.

Important to know:
Reflexology is a complementary therapy — it should be used alongside medical treatment, not as a replacement.

Everyone’s experience with nerve pain is unique, so results may vary.
Regular treatments may help build longer-lasting benefits.

Nerve pain may be a part of your life, but it doesn’t have to control your whole wellbeing. Gentle, holistic approaches like reflexology can bring comfort, balance, and moments of relief.

COPD Awareness

Raising awareness for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) — a long-term lung condition that makes breathing difficult. It includes illnesses such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and is often caused by smoking, air pollution, or long-term exposure to irritants.

Living with COPD can feel challenging, both physically and emotionally. While medical care is essential, holistic and complementary therapies can provide valuable support alongside conventional treatment:

Reflexology – may help ease breathlessness and promote relaxation, reducing stress that can worsen symptoms.
Massage Therapy – helps release muscle tension (especially in the chest, shoulders, and back) and encourages better circulation.
Lymphatic Drainage – can support the body’s natural detox processes, gently easing swelling and improving overall wellbeing.
Relaxation Techniques – calm the nervous system, supporting more efficient breathing and reducing anxiety.

COPD reminds us how precious every breath is. We honour those living with the condition, raise awareness, and encourage compassionate support through both medical and complementary care.

Breathing may feel harder with COPD, but support, understanding, and mindful therapies can make the journey lighter.

World Diabetes Day

Today we raise awareness of diabetes — a condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Living with diabetes often means finding ways to support not only physical health, but also emotional wellbeing.

How reflexology can help:
While reflexology is not a cure for diabetes, it can be a gentle, supportive therapy to help with some of the challenges that come alongside it:

Encourages relaxation, helping to lower stress (which can impact blood sugar levels).
Improves circulation, especially in the feet and lower legs, where people with diabetes may experience reduced blood flow.
Supports better sleep, which plays a key role in managing energy and overall wellbeing.
Offers time to pause, connect, and focus on self-care.

On World Diabetes Day, it’s important to spread awareness, encourage healthy lifestyle choices, and explore complementary therapies that can nurture balance and resilience.

Small steps of care make a big difference.

The gallbladder and thyroid may seem unrelated, but they’re more connected than you might think, especially from a holistic perspective. Their relationship influences metabolism, hormone balance, and digestion.

1. Thyroid Function Affects the Gallbladder
The thyroid gland regulates metabolism, including how the liver and gallbladder work.
Thyroid hormones, especially T3, help stimulate the production and flow of bile, a digestive fluid made by the liver and stored in the gallbladder.
If thyroid levels are low (hypothyroidism), bile can become thick and sluggish, leading to poor fat digestion, bloating, constipation, or even gallstones.

2. Gallbladder Health Affects the Thyroid
The gallbladder helps digest fats, which are essential for making hormones, including thyroid hormones.
Poor bile flow can cause deficiencies in vitamins A, D, E, and K, which impact thyroid function and immunity.
When bile doesn’t flow well, detoxification slows down, contributing to hormonal imbalance, inflammation, or autoimmune thyroid issues such as Hashimoto’s.

3. The Liver-Gallbladder-Thyroid Connection
The liver converts T4 (inactive hormone) to T3 (active hormone). If liver or bile flow is sluggish, this process weakens.
Since the gallbladder stores and releases bile, it’s part of this metabolic chain.
When one area is out of balance, it can ripple through metabolism, digestion, and hormone health.

Supporting the liver, gallbladder, and thyroid together can improve energy, digestion, and overall wellbeing.

Remembrance Sunday

Today, we pause to remember the courage, sacrifice, and service of all those who gave their lives — and those who continue to serve — so that we may live in peace and freedom.

It’s a time for reflection, gratitude, and honouring the resilience of the human spirit.
At 11am, we join together in silence, carrying their memory in our hearts.

"At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them."
Lest we forget.

When it comes to reflexology, finding a trained and qualified practitioner is crucial for your safety and well-being. Reflexology can offer many benefits, from reducing stress and promoting relaxation to improving circulation and balancing energy. However, an untrained or unqualified reflexologist may not have the necessary knowledge to perform treatments safely and effectively.

A qualified reflexologist will have completed an accredited training program and hold professional qualifications, ensuring that they understand the body’s reflex points and the best practices for treatment. They’ll also follow ethical guidelines to make sure you receive the best possible care.

How to Find a Qualified Reflexologist in the UK:

Look for Professional Accreditation: Ensure your reflexologist is registered with a recognised body, such as the Association of Reflexologists (AoR).
Check for Relevant Qualifications: Qualified reflexologists will typically have certifications from accredited institutions.
Ask for Recommendations: Word-of-mouth referrals from friends, family, or other healthcare providers can help you find a trusted reflexologist.
Check Reviews and Testimonials: Look for feedback from other clients to get a sense of the therapist’s expertise and approach.

Remember, your health is in safe hands when you choose a qualified reflexologist who has the right training and experience. If you’re unsure where to begin your search, feel free to reach out to me for guidance or recommendations.
