Let’s go back to basics for a minute. Understanding the ketogenic diet for drug-resistant epilepsy can be a bit confusing, but it doesn’t need to be!

Simply put, it changes your body’s metabolism, the way your body gets energy. Normally, we use carbohydrates, like bread, pasta etc. for fuel. But on the ketogenic diet, your body uses fat for energy instead.

Not to worry! Follow our top three tips for getting children involved in the kitchen:

1️⃣ Start small: simple tasks like mixing, pouring or washing vegetables are easily to follow steps and great entry points for children of all ages

2️⃣ Choose their favourite recipes, nothing motivates young chefs quite like knowing their favourite dish is waiting at the finish line

3️⃣ Embrace the mess! Flour will spill, counters may get sticky and clean up might take a little longer, but the joy and memories are worth it. Embrace the chaos!

We understand that complex epilepsy and the ketogenic diet can sometimes have a significant impact on psychological well-being.

While many patients find the benefits outweigh the challenges, there's no denying that these challenges can take a toll and may be difficult to manage.

Our number one tip for managing these effects? ‘Communication is key!’ Maintain an open dialogue with your dietician and ketogenic team. They can help you navigate any issues and work with you to make any necessary adjustments or accomodations.

And don’t forget to acknowledge yourself! It’s easy to get caught up in the struggles, but it’s important to step back and recognise the hard work you’ve put in.
