Pre., Pro., Post., …and 𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘵𝘰biotics. So., what is the drill🤷🏽♀️?
Research suggests that certain microbial strains of gut bacteria may indeed be able to influence various aspects of sleep health.
But can we really improve our sleep and some of the related things that are most likely to keep us awake at night., by targeting our gut health through pre., pro., and postbiotics🤔?
The link between the gut and our sleep, includes complex associations toward various metabolic actions, as well as in maintaining the protective gut-barrier and our overall intestinal balance.., potentially through anti-inflammatory, nutritive or antimicrobial properties.
These connect our cognitive and emotional brain areas with gut functions., and is so becoming increasingly considered as a therapeutic target for a range of conditions including anxiety, PTSD and insomnia.
The various ways to improve the population and diversity of the gut microbiome., include incorporating whole-grain and plant-based foods within the diet🥕., with good levels of vegetables and polyphenols..
.all of which., just so happens to be very close to the Herbalists’ heart🤍. We can term these plant medicines., phytobiotics 🌱.
This creates the enquiry for the huge potential of pre-, pro-, and postbiotic treatments, that may help to improve the onset, quality and latency of sleep by targeting the microbiome, or health of the gastrointestinal system. 🧐
There’s so much to cover.. lets do this in 3 parts..
1. First we have looked to the fundamentals., what exactly is the connection between the gut and the brain anyway 🧠?
2. Now., let’s unpack the pre., pro., and postbiotic fascination., if., and how exactly are they likely be able to help with these {unrelated} conditions 📖🔬📚.
3. Then finally, we’ll go plant-based [at least for the studies anyway..,] that will help us to decide whether there really is a place for the phyto-gut target in herbal health, and for the related sleep medicine🌿😴🍃.
., here’s Part 2 ..
