I often get asked what my practice looks like, what it is that I do when I'm not teaching. That I must be so calm all the time and zen every day. Let me be the first to tell you that is most definitely not the case.
My practice, like everyone else's, fluctuates between strong, challenging and powerful Asana practice to really work through frustrations and sometimes anger....to sitting as still as I can to meditate, often practicing Trataka (candle gazing) and intentionally focusing on the flame of a candle for anything up to 20 minutes when my body feels weak or achy.
The most challenging practices come when taking yoga off of the mat and into life. Remembering to reflect and look inwards at myself and my conduct and to hold myself accountable when I make mistakes. Remembering to be kind, truthful and respectful to others, regardless of their behaviours or the circumstances I find myself in. Remembering that I have a choice each morning to decide whether I'm going to look at things positively or be a grump about things I can't control. And doing my absolute best to remember to be grateful and content with myself and with my life.
Because in truth, practice is whatever you need it to be, whenever you need it to be. It doesn't have to be in a specific space, nor do you have to be wearing active wear. You can practice at any moment, of any day by taking a breath and giving yourself a moment to remember your practice, whatever it may look like.
So now I ask you, what does your practice look like?
