“Working at the hospice at this time of year is a real privilege. We get to greet people who are ill, or grieving, with warmth and light and kindness.

“It's rare, in life, that we can fix another person's problems for them. But we can give them the gift of our loving attention and remind them that they aren't alone.

“It's good for the soul!”

"For many of our patients and families at home, our SinglePoint service can be a lifeline, especially on New Year's Day when lots of other services are closed.

"It is a privilege to be the first person a patient or relative might speak to and can begin to get help or advice from. Just hearing a calm, friendly voice can put people at ease and reassure them that someone is listening."

Caroline, SinglePoint Call Handler 🧡

We opened the doors of St Helena Hospice to our first patient 40 years ago and we have been celebrating our Ruby Anniversary together throughout 2025 🧡

Thank you so much for your continued and generous support - you are amazing ⭐

As we settle in for New Year's Eve, Co-Chief Executive Karen and some of our team take a fun retro trip down memory lane at what 1985 looked like 🥳

As we come to a close on our ruby anniversary year, we would like to thank you so much for your kindness and generosity in helping us to support and care for people over 40 years and into the future ❤️

Here is a special message from one of the wonderful founders of St Helena Hospice, Dr Elizabeth Hall 🧡

"We understand that it can be hard for people at this time of year, for all different reasons, but we try our best to lift spirits and make things as easy as possible for them by supporting them to be able to enjoy time with their loved ones over the Christmas period.

“Christmas can be a motivator for people to set goals for themselves and we support them to achieve this, such as attending a celebration or being able to get into a wheelchair to attend their grandchildren’s school nativities.”

Nicola, Specialist Physiotherapist 🧡

“Christmas can be a very emotional time of year. It should be happy and joyful, but we know for some it may be difficult. If someone is unwell or if you have a loved one who is ill or coming to the end of their life, this can really impact people and their feelings around the festive period.

“I enjoy working alongside patients and their families supporting them for the most positive outcome. Lots of people choose to be at home as they become less well and for end of life care.

“It is a pleasure to be able to support people to spend time with their families and be where they choose to be. This is important all year round but supporting people to have a happy Christmas is extra special.”

Our events this year would not have been possible without the generosity and support of our incredible volunteers. 🧡

We want to say a special thank you to Brad Rabett from Complete Event. You have gone above and beyond for the people we care for. Generously providing all the lighting and equipment free of charge for our Pier to Pier, Midnight Walk and Light Up a Life events.

Your kindness has helped us create meaningful moments for local families when they need it most. Thank you for everything you do. 👏

“At Christmas, when the world feels busier and brighter, carers quietly do what they always do, they show up with compassion, patience and kindness.

“Being there for people who need us most, especially at this time of year, is where the real meaning of Christmas lives.”
