2,263 people had contact with one of our clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) during a home visit, phone call or email last financial year.

That’s 15,380 caring conversations, thanks to your generous support 🧡

CNSs can have open and honest conversations with patients at home and may help them to think about the sort of care they may want when they become more unwell.

CNSs also support the family who may be worried, tired or struggling to understand their loved one's appointments and medicines.

Five dedicated St Helena Hospice volunteers were honoured to meet the King and Queen on their Royal visit to Dedham today 👑

Denise, Carole, Jean, Elizabeth and Veronica all volunteer in our charity shop on Dedham high street, and were invited to join in the Heroes in the Local Community celebrations.

Denise, who has passionately volunteered for 10 years, said:

"We told them lots of facts about St Helena Hospice and the Queen said to us that she recognises there aren’t enough hospices. She was genuinely very keen to know about what we do at the hospice."

"7 years ago today, my mum died in the inpatient unit here at St Helena 🧡

"She’d had multiple complex illnesses for many years and, as many families, we struggled to cope with being passed around from specialist to specialist, each treating one illness but not the holistic picture, and spending what felt like as much time in hospital with her as we did out.

"When St Helena scooped us up as a family, the magic started.

"SinglePoint and the hospice in the home community team took over her care and gave us a place to ask questions, understand and plan for her future, and kept her at home and out of hospital. Her last week was spent in the hospice IPU and the care she, and we as a family, got from the team here was just exceptional.

"The amazing care we were gifted by St Helena made me want to do more and give back in some way. I initially became a Trustee and then in 2022 I started working here full time.

"Today, I find myself as Co-CEO and the only reason I’m here is because of her and the care that the amazing team here provided. I am still grateful every single day for that.

"I walked around the Hospice today feeling so honoured to be a part of this organisation and it felt very fitting to see the first snowdrops of the year blooming against a backdrop of blue sky. I whole heartedly believe that the years ahead are going to be a positive and exciting time for St Helena.

"We will absolutely regrow our clinical services, we will continue to deliver exceptional care to our community, and we will provide job security for everyone that works here. I'm proud to work alongside the St Helena team."

February is Payroll Giving Month, celebrating one of the simplest and most tax-efficient ways to support charities doing vital work.

Payroll Giving allows employees to donate straight from their salary before tax — meaning your gift goes further at no extra cost to you. Even a small monthly donation can have a big, lasting impact.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who already supports us through Payroll Giving, and we’d love more workplaces to get involved. If you’re an employer or corporate partner, Payroll Giving can be a brilliant way to engage staff, support causes they care about, and amplify your social impact — especially when combined with matched giving.

There is a lot of news right now about the financial state of hospices nationally and we want to reassure you that, after the difficult decision over the summer to have to reduce some of our clinical services, St Helena is now in a financially stable position.

We continue to be here for people across north east Essex when they need specialist hospice care.

We want to thank you for your continued amazing support in helping us to be here for local people who face dying, death and bereavement 🧡

Hospices have recently been awarded further money as part of the government’s capital funding scheme. Whilst we welcome this, it remains a one-off pot of money that can only be spent on things like building work and new IT systems. It is not allowed to be spent on our nurses' salaries or funding our clinical services where the need is greatest.

We continue to stand with our colleagues in other hospices up and down the UK who are struggling to keep their lights on.

We want to see long-term sustainable funding for palliative and end of life care, with annual uplifts that at least match inflation and wider cost increases, so that end of life care is treated the same way the NHS funds healthcare at all other stages in life.
