The Candlelit Carol Service which is being held on Sunday 14th December at 2.30pm. This year we are pleased to welcome the Heathlands School Choir who will be performing and singing with us.

This Sunday (30th), join us from 11am to 1pm. for our Mulled Wine and Mince Pie event. As usual, Octavia will be singing. It's a perfect chance to renew or start your membership, catch up with friends, and learn about our exciting plans for next year.

Remember, membership for Friends of St
Mary's old church costs £5 annually per person, £10 per family, or you can make a donation.

Our Mulled Wine and Mince Pie event on Sunday 30th November from 11am -1pm. Octavia will be singing and, as usual, it will be an opportunity for you to renew or initiate your membership, meet up with friends and hear about our exciting event plans for next year.

We have experienced a productive and eventful year thus far, though it was sadly marked by the unexpected passing of our Founder and Chairman, Martin Long, whose leadership will be profoundly missed.
As many of you know—and several of you attended—we hosted a number of noteworthy events this year, including expert-led presentations on a 16th Century Essex witch trial and the Roman excavations at the Old County Hospital site.
In July, students from Heathlands School visited the historic old church, and the Resonate Choir delivered another outstanding performance to an appreciative audience.
Additionally, we are launching a new website in early 2026; further details will be provided in due course.

The magnificent door on our beautiful ancient church, St Mary's Old Church West Bergholt, has been opening and closing for a thousand years – but now we could do with a bit of extra help.
Our dedicated ’church opening and closing team’ needs more volunteers to ensure we
can open every day at 10am and close every day at 4pm to allow visitors time for
private prayer, review parish records or simply sit and enjoy the peace and quiet of
this very special environment.

RESONATE is a group of singers who originally met in a world music choir in Colchester. After singing together for about 15 years, these seven vocalists decided to embark on a separate journey, focusing on a repertoire they deeply appreciate. This includes "Sacred Harp," a musical tradition from the late 18th century that originated in the southern United States, traditional Slavic songs from Bulgarian, Croatian, Georgian, and other cultures, as well as traditional songs from South Africa and various other African countries.

However, their repertoire is not limited to these three styles; you can expect to be surprised by songs from different parts of the world, including Bluegrass, Blues, and Gospel.
