πŸ’œ Have a narrow based carrier? πŸ’œ

Some carriers, especially cheaper ones, have narrow bases, with no way to make them wider.

This means that you'll find babies bigger than a small newborn, will start to lose that 'M' position. Their knees will not be held higher than their bum, which is the natural and ergonomical position.

But all is not lost, try this!
πŸ‘‰ Grab yourself a scarf, or any long bit of soft material
πŸ‘‰ Gather it up in the centre, so it makes a kind of rope
πŸ‘‰ Use this "rope" to lift the knees, by positioning it snuggly from one knee to another knee
πŸ‘‰ Take the material behind your back, keeping it snug and tie it off in a double knot
πŸ‘‰ Now find the top of the material and spread it up baby, making an extra layer to your sling

And thats it! Babies knees have now been lifted so they are higher than the bum and you'll probably find it is much more comfortable for you too!

Of course, this is a temporary fix really, and you are better off sourcing a different sling from myself or your nearest sling library. Both you and baby will definitely be more comfy!

Have you got a narrow based carrier? Give this a try and let me know how it goes!

πŸ’ Happy Mothers Day πŸ’

I hope you have all had a lovely day?

🌹 Whether you are a mother of many or a mother of one, a mother to a small baby or a mother to grown up children.

🌹 Whether you are a mother to mothers, or a mother to your fellow sisters and friends.

🌹 Whether you identify as a mother, or the word doesn't suit you, but your actions define you as one to others.

🌹 Whether you mourn a mother or mourn a child, old or young.

I wish you a day to reflect, to see your achievements and blessing, to see your perceived failures and regrets. Breath it all in and know you are living a good life ✨️

I wish you a joyful day 🌹🌸🌼

And of course, I thank my own mother for all she does for me. I am bias, but I do believe she is one of the best mums there is 😊❀️

πŸ’œ Carrier too high up babies head? πŸ’œ

No sling should come further than the ear lobe. This allows baby to maintain head movement and clear airways.

If your carrier is coming up too far on your baby's head, but there is no way to make the panel shorter, this little tip may help you!

πŸ‘‰ Start by reaching inside the carrier to baby's bum
πŸ‘‰ Lift baby so their head comes up above the top of the panel
πŸ‘‰ Use one hand to hold baby there, then use your free hand to flatten the waistband and move it up your body
πŸ‘‰ Use your hand to kind of tuck material between you and baby, then lower baby back into the panel
πŸ‘‰ Tighten the waistband and the shoulders if necessary

Panel height should now be lower on your baby!

Does this help with your baby's position? Did you know about where the panel should sit?

Let me know your thoughts in the comments πŸ‘‡

πŸ’œ LIVE SERIES Safety while Babywearing πŸ’œ

My next Instagram live is going to be discussing the ever important issue of safety while you are wearing your baby in a sling.

I plan on covering:
πŸ‘‰ T.I.C.K.S guidelines, and why this can be confusing
πŸ‘‰ Simpler ways to remember safety
πŸ‘‰ What these guidelines actually mean in real life carrying and why they are so important

If you have any questions you'd like me to cover, then pop them below or send me a message!

As always, this will be live so you can also ask your questions in real time. It will also remain up on my grid so you can go back and watch another time.

These lives are not meant as tutorials about how to carry, but as a place to discuss common Babywearing issues 😊

See you next week!

πŸ’œ Babywearing older children πŸ’œ

Some of you may know that K has been on a babywearing strike for aaaaggggeeessss!!

I was quite sad because I wore the other 3 well past 3 years old. K is my last child, so I didnt want my own babywearing journey to end so soon!

But the last couple of days he has asked for me to carry him on the school pick up, and did not protest when I said he'd have to go in the carrier!

It's made me so happy!! 😁

Quite often when I mention things like toddler carriers, or carrying a child past the age they've learnt to walk, I get very funny looks πŸ€ͺ

I know it is hard to imagine when you have a small baby. But older children get tired too! 😴

Of course they are stubborningly independent 🀣 and will insist on walking along with you. But they are just not big enough or strong enough to walk as far as you or your older children.

So what do you do?

πŸ‘‰ Well you could take a buggy "just in case". But that is quite a faff isnt it? Especially if they end up not using it!

πŸ‘‰ You could just carry them in arms. But lets face it, your arms are not as strong as you'd like them to be!

πŸ‘‰ You could pop them on your shoulders? This is slightly more comfortable for longer distances. But its not very convenient if you have other kids, and you've got to be careful going in and out of buildings or under trees.

So why not take a carrier⁉️ You can attach it around your waist or to a bag when you are not using it, but then whip it out when they inevitably decide they are tired or just dont want to walk anymore!

What do you think about carrying older children? Have you ever considered a bigger carrier? I'd love to hear your thoughts below!

πŸ’œ Sling Library and Mini Workshop πŸ’œ

Next library session is coming up this Tuesday 3rd March, from 10am at St Johns Church Community centre.

Join us to pick up a sling to hire or get some help with your own!

Library sessions work as drop ins and on a first come first serve basis. Whether you book or not, please come at any point during the 2 hour session.

In my mini workshop this month, I'll be showing you how to safely and comfortably feed your baby in a sling. Whether you are feeding from the breast or from a bottle, I'll show you how!

Suitable for any age baby, but ideally, for breastfed babies, once feeding has been properly established.

See you there!

πŸ’œ Babywearing Consultations πŸ’œ

These private sessions are just for you and your child, plus whoever you'd like to bring to either help or learn too.

They are held in my cabin πŸ›–, where we'll have access to all the slings of the library (excluding those on hire obviously).

I never rush you, and if baby decides they need to feed for a chunk of time 🀱🏻🍼, or needs a big nappy change πŸ’©, that won't dip into your booked time.

Sometimes I even end up listening to feeding woes and birth stories (which I love!), and I'm happy to use my training as a Breastfeeding councillor to try and address those issues 😊 I also have such an amazing network of professionals with , that if I dont have the answers I know who will and can signpost on!

⏳️ How long you book really does depend! An experienced wearer may only need 30 minutes because you will literally just try on 3 or 4 carriers quickly.

But an inexperienced wearer may need a whole 60 or 90 minutes for the exact same outcome, because we'll also go over how to put slings on, safety and tips on how to get comfortable!

Whatever you book I try to keep within time as best as possible, and if you do need longer I will happily extend on the day if I don't have someone else coming in to see me.

If you have been on the fence as to whether a private session is worth it, then let this be your sign that yes they are! Go ahead and book 😊

For that little extra bit of investment, you'll get a whole lot more personal and bespoke support ❀️

I cant wait to meet you πŸ’“

πŸ‘‰ How to know your baby is ready for it
πŸ‘‰ How to do it safely
πŸ‘‰ Alternatives if your baby isn't ready, or you dont want to use this position

If you've got any questions or issues you'd like to make sure I cover, leave me a comment below or send me a message 😊

πŸ’œ Loose shoulder straps? πŸ’œ

❌️ The trick to this one is not to just pull on your buckles to tighten.

All this does is pull the babies back in because of the friction between the straps and your shoulders.

βœ…οΈ Instead, tug the straps and pull the slack round to the buckles first, then tighten.

That's it! A simple yet effective trick πŸ˜‰

Make sure to follow for more tips and tricks!

Colchester Slings

I fell in love with carrying my children when my eldest was born, almost 7 years ago. His name is Isaac and would still be carried now given the opportunity! I also have a 3 year old son called Theo who got the benefit of being held close to me in a sling from the day he was born. I am currently pregnant with baby number 3 and I can’t wait to have those snuggly newborn cuddles all over again!

After Katherine decided to focus on her business in Ipswich, I agreed to take over the Colchester Library and I’m very much looking forward to getting to know you all properly and helping you with all your carrying needs.

At the moment my team will consist of my amazing mum as our admin support and the lovely Krysy, who will carry on as our peer supporter. I myself am a babywearing consultant, having done my training with Slingababy UK in February 2017.
