📆Today is World Diabetes Day.
We want to take a moment to discuss the potential impact of Diabetes on Ear Health.
🚨The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) estimates that by 2025, more than 5 million people in the UK will be diagnosed with diabetes [NICE, 2020a]
💊Diabetes is a condition where sugar levels in blood are too high because the body isn't producing any or enough of the hormone insulin which helps to regulate sugar levels.
💉Patients with Diabetes will treat their condition with managing their diet, medication in tablet form and/or by injecting insulin.

🦠One of the complications of Diabetes is being more prone to infection.
👂At Causeway Clear Ears, Our Specialist Nurses treats a large number of patients with Ear Infections and a significant number of these patients will have Diabetes which is why we take time at the start of your appointment to take your medical history relevant to your Ear Health.
👩‍⚕️This aids us in our decision making about the safest and most appropriate form of Ear Care to provide.
👨‍⚕When we diagnose an infection we will link in with your GP to recommend an appropriate treatment.
👂Regular Ear Care is a helpful way for our Diabetic patients to help reduce the risk of developing Ear Infections.

💉EAR-SYRINGE:💉
Anyone remember this device? As an 8-year-old little girl, I remember my Mum bringing me to the GP due to a wax blockage in my ear.
👨‍⚕The GP filled the syringe with water and blasted it into my ear! Thankfully, this practice is now outdated and the only place you will find this syringe is in the museum!🕍
The reasons this is outdated are several:
💧The jet of water was aimed directly at the eardrum risking a perforation (hole)
🌡The water temperature was not understood to be important. Now we know the water needs to be a particular temperature in order to decrease the risk of dizziness.😵
💦The force of water was not regulated - now if we use Water Irrigation we use an Electronic Irrigator with various measure settings and we do not aim the water at the ear drum!
