Listen I get it. I’m not a big morning person. The last thing I want to do when I wake up is hit the gym and shock my body.
Morning yoga however - THAT I can vibe with. A slow start that builds and allows you to walk off your mat ready to face the day.
So join me! There’s a new 15 minute practice on the channel today. I’d love for you to try it🫶🏼

My favorite thing about Mat Pilates is that you all need is, well, your mat. And yourself! Anytime, anywhere, in a studio or in the sun. This day, I was in the port of Colon, Panama and the sun was really coming out to play 🌞
Keep your eyes peeled - new morning Pilates coming to the channel in just a couple days ✨

Strong but steady is my focus this week on the mat - I’ve always loved that feeling of control in my movement. Knowing exactly which muscles are switched on and how that makes certain poses work, led by the breath. A workshop with Edward Clarke last year really highlighted to me how choppy and under confident my transitions were. Ever since I’ve been really conscious of moving smoothly, with breath and with focused confidence. Never stop learning. 🫶🏼 thankyou for coming to today’s mat musings 😂

This one is for the LAYDEEZ 🩸
Movement for menstrual cycles was a real TREND last year, with apps created to build a workout plan around your time of month. If this works for you then I’m not going to discourage you but for those of us that do not reliably have the exact same symptoms every month, just know that you can listen to your own body. We are not fragile petals and if you feel like you want to get upside down or lift some heavy weight on day 1 and 2 then go get it! If your body wants to do nothing but lay down then that’s amazing too! But let’s listen to what we actually need. Intuition. Trust yourself. 🫶🏼

Sometimes, we need a little extra help to wind down of an evening. The day has been too stimulating, and it’s hard to immediately shut that down when you turn the lights off. I’ve got something for you. A 20 minute yoga flow for the evening, to slow your roll, and to help you switch your brain to bedtime mode. I hope it helps ✨

All jokes aside, we all know the age old thing people say about yoga - I’m not flexible enough!
That line of reasoning doesn’t work for a practise that is so much more than just ‘stretching’. Being a professional dancer, I am flexible. What I am not, always, is centered, grounded, calm, or without self induced anxieties. My yoga practice strengthens my mind so that I am able to do my ‘other job’ with less fear, self doubt and with my more mental and physical control. It holds me accountable to my competitive mindset - do I really need to push that pose that far or is it my ego? And that extends out into my real life, and onto the stage.
I’d recommend all bodies, all levels of flexibility, all walks of life, to roll out a mat daily and see what could happen. How it could change your life unexpectedly and subtly, over time and consist practise.

If you want to start a consistent practice, find my free classes over on my YouTube channel, GeGe Movement. The link is in my bio.

Santosha, the yogic principal of contentment, is the thing that can sometimes feel challenging in an overstimulating world, of social media, war and climate change. This post, on your feed, is adding to the overstimulation. Of never feeling like you have enough, know enough, because there’s so much information and stimuli out there now. So how can we combat that in everyday life and find a feeling of contentment and peace within ourselves, without spending all your hard earned money?
It’s not about ignoring problems, rather addressing them from a place of grounded stability. Things I find help :
1) a regular meditation practice. Guided, unguided, 10 minutes or 30 minutes, sitting with yourself, your breath, taking pause to be completely present will bring you back to what is actually important to you.
2) prioritize time with people that make you feel like a whole human. You know the ones! You can belly laugh or honest deep dive chat over a coffee or a wine. Dance wildly to beyonce in the kitchen. Read your books next to each other. It has an uncanny way of pressing the reset button.
3) Get outside. Now I know a lot of my audience is from the north of England and it’s January 😂 but get your coat on, trek to your nearest park and get amongst the crisp air and the trees. Take your headphones out and listen to the sounds of nature around you, even for 10 minutes. There’s so much research around how transformative this is, and it’s FREE ✨

However you need to reset so that you can navigate life in all of its beauty and discomfort, do that. I’m sending love ❤️

It’s very easy to forget to cool down after a show, rehearsal or class. I think you should prioritize it and here’s why - dancing isn’t just physical. It’s a mental game too. When you’re coming down from a performance, it isn’t just your body coming down, it’s your mind too. The same way that coming to a dead stop after a very energetic show is jarring to your body, your mind is also wired and needs winding down. A cool down serves both. It slows down your heart rate, it releases build up tension in your body, and it allows your mind to process and take stock. A nervous system reset. Yang to yin. It aids your recovery, so you can keep doing that thing that you love - moving and performing. Why wouldn’t you take those 15 minutes?
Find the link to YouTube channel in my bio which is where you’ll find my dancer cool down. GeGe Movement. See you there 💭

I will never stop shouting from the rooftops that dancers NEED to warm up before they train or perform. Why?
Because I have lived experience of injury - because I believed that I didn’t ’need’ to prepare. I was doing a lift I’ve done many times…autopilot. And then I landed on my back instead of my feet. For years after I had nerve spasms that would strike me out of nowhere. It was an incredible lesson…I never had the ego to miss a warm up ever again and I’ve thankfully enjoyed a long career on stage.
So here’s my bid to you - take 10 minutes to dynamically warm up. I even have a video for you! Find it on my channel, GeGe Movement on YouTube, or at the link in my bio. 🧡 💃
