This little great tit has caught a very contagious viral infection called avian pox which causes swellings around the beak and on the feet. Unfortunately any little wild bird that catches this disease will die of starvation. Our birds can pick up this fatal virus from bird feeders that aren’t cleaned regularly. Ideally, Soak bird feeders in a bucket of water overnight containing a sq**rt of washing up liquid &/or Milton steriliser. The next day, scrub the feeders with a bottle brush and then rinse them thoroughly and let them dry naturally. Put clean bird feeders out once a week, bird baths and water drinkers should also be drained, scrubbed & refilled on a very regular basis and hopefully we can help our garden birds avoid this awful virus.....
